Poor Sportsmanship?

I just finished playing a pair of tournament games against a player whose rating was substantially higher than mine. I lost the first game in a rook and pawn ending. I politely resigned when the ending was clearly lost. The second game, a 56 move marathon, came down to a Queens and pawns ending in which I held a passed pawn. It was a nail-biting contest where I generally had only one move that would not lead to my king being checkmated or to a draw by perpetual check. I agonized over the game and eventually promoted my pawn. At the mate-in-one stage my opponent neither moved nor resigned. Instead, he let me wait 3 days to win on time. This struck me as unsportsmanlike. How does the rest of the community feel?

Enjoy the win, regardless we have to many others games in queue to worry about how you won it in won position. Same with resigning before a checkmate, its cool. Now if it was an OTB game in which you had to sit there 3 days well would be differnet, but same conclusion you won! Smile and move on. :-)

Congrats on a fine win :)  Sounds as if your opponent has a spot of "sore-loser" syndrome.  Last year while my rating was just above 1400, I play a 1700 pluser.  After beating him three times amongst some loses...he sent me a message that "you keep beating me."  After the third win, he would not accept another challenge from me.  I just felt as though he was concerned more with his ratings than the great games of chess we can experience.  I felt then that he was a sore loser and still feel that we should all play the game for the pleasure and friendships that come our way.  I love the game and continually try to improve to be more competitve but will always accept "losing" as a part of growth and advancement.  Best of luck to all Cool
