A good chess coach is a player with instincts,to maintain the attack tempo and sustain a winning instinct.

 

Yeah i agree. Coach=teacher. I guess what I would like a coach to do would be to appreciate that i have a unique style (as does everyone) and try to help evolve the player into someone original, rather than base my style on someone else in hopes of becoming a carbon copy.

If i wanted to be a professional, gear my training towards looking at some high level games etc. If I just wanted to be a more creative player, direct and share with me concepts and examples of how to be a more creative player.

I definitely do appreciate coaches who recognize my individuality, and aim to bring that out, rather than the 'you are wrong, i am right' approach, moreso the 'that's good/not the best move you could make, but this may be better, don't you agree?' approach.

Of course, this is not from Chess coaching, i am a performer, and i have found that what i have described above gets the most open and accepting responses to getting me to change what i've been doing.

A good chess coach is the same as a good teacher. You need to be able to teach in a simple, easy to understand and entertaining way.

Here's a question for you: from your experience of chess students of past, what made them effective in learning from you? No doubt some of your students learned faster and/or progressed further than others for reasons other than innate talent.
