Indian HR Ministry Raises Controversy Over Anand's Nationality

The current world chess champion Viswanathan Anand is probably one of the most successful "sportsmen" competing on an international level in the history of India , and he has been a very pleasant figure in the chess scene over decades not only with his professional attitude towards the game and beautiful play, but also with the very humble & friendly "Mr. Nice Guy" personality. We already are well aware of all these, but it seems the Indian Government isn't.

Anand has been subject to suspicions about his nationality by the very Human Resources Ministry of his country, just because he lives in Spain. Amazing stuff, really.

The HR Ministry, when Anand was just about to be given a honorary doctorate in Mathematics by The University of Hyderabad, caused this whole mess by "investigating" his citizenship status.

Here are the links to some news articles that further explain the issue:

http://www.ndtv.com/article/sports/anand-denied-doctorate-due-to-confusion-over-nationality-46858  (This is the source of the above picture as well.)

The controversy concluded in Anand refusing the doctorate degree for now, and this is what he has tweeted about the mess:

It is just irritating this whole doctorate debacle. Don't they see that I always play with the Indian flag by my side...

.. I am in hyderebad to enjoy the simul and meet mathematicians , let's hope this doesn't spoil the ambience. I'm having a great time.

UPDATE:

Times of India now has a video of Anand's wife and manager Aruna Anand commenting on all this at their website. You can also read the full article here.

2nd UPDATE: It seems WCC Viswanathan Anand will now be Dr. Viswanathan Anand too, after the HR Minister apologizes himself and declares there's no problem regarding his nationality:

3rd UPDATE: Anand's latest tweet, as a Doctor! :

from Dr. Anand just call me Indian Anand . Glad this bizzare thing has come to an end

Vishy is World Chess Champion. He is admired worldwide and is a hero in his country, India.

This soon to be forgotten nonsense is just "A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

    Go, Vishy!

Autually, an honorary doctorate does not  permit the holder to use the title doctor before his/her name.

Had they just Googled or searched his name on Wikipedia it would have shown that he was born in India, but since they had know one to question this month they just chose a man who has done amazing things for chess in India. Things people will do for a couple rupees these days.

There are official reports that human rights are also violeted in Germany and the other "democratic" countries. It is not a thing that the tv channels, who depent on parties, money and concerns, will tell in public.

I only remind you that in some german authorities they put people in the corner and shout at them as they were animals.

Concerns own huge amounts of blood dolars and corrupted euros. They just buy politicians to make them strong enough to rule and beeing marionets. The politicians who remain uncoruppted dont have enough means to fight for justice. Unless the people supports them.

Depending upon the politician only . Mr.vishy already reached top position and he knows very well  . Not to worry about the Doctorate. All the people of india and chess lovers always behind him.

Not to accept the political rewards.

    @tryst and SonOfPearl: Thanks Smile

I personally think there's nothing intentional or political about this, seems to me it's just a bureaucracy malfunction, almost exactly the same sorf of thing that Shivsky has explained. This, of course, doesn't make it anymore ok. Good thing Anand has very strong nerves and he won't let these distract him in his preparations for the upcoming tournaments.

They (the Indian Govt) had no issues when they awarded him the Rajiv Khel Ratna, then Arjuna Award, the highest awards given to a sportsperson, and then as recently as 2007,  they gave him PadmaShri, which is the second highest civilian award (and the first ever sports person to receive it), and they need proof if he is Indian. If any of them had bothered to watch the recent world championship, there were two flags, one was Bulgarian, and the other was Indian. I am surprised, they did not think he was Bulgarian.

If this was bureaucracy, then it is a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

If it is politics, it is known that Anand is friendly with some politicians in the opposition, although he himself is not political.

It will end up back-firing on the bureaucrat(s) to their embarassment.

I cant say anything about this article but i can give a philosophical aspect, claiming that nationality is unimportant for every human beeing.

Todays problems are geographical space, politics and resources. Maybe humanity should join to solve those problems instead dividing itself into nationalities.

I find flags cool when it is about sports. But countries and regims taught people to be proud beeing 'x' nationality and sometimes that they are better than others.

It doesnt make us more human than we allready are!

Can that minister imagine what will happen if Anand takes up Spain citizenship enraged by this public scandal? Spain would welcome him with open hands and countless degrees I think.

This is bad on so many levels ... though as somebody from India, I can only assume that this had more to do with  mindless red tape/ people who follow flow charts to the letter  rather than common sense.

Had my name spelled incorrectly on my PAN (Tax ID) card a few years back and when I went to open a bank account,  showing them my birth certificate, my passport and all other forms of ID did not suffice  ... the one letter missing in my name was the bureaucratic deal-breaker!  I had to jump through hoops and get this "one" ID card fixed before they accepted my application.

I'm sure some administrative genius wanted proof that Anand was a "current" resident of India and when he couldn't get it, he decided to escalate the matter.

Mediocre people can't stand brilliant people's success. Mediocre politicians are no exception.
