Pianoman4 does it again in this humorously illustrated post on the French Defense! Full of instructional material and with enough theory to make it a viable option at any level of play, this post provides a good weapon for arsenal of any serious player.
In a typical French Defence, most will find it hard to stay awake without the assistance of 1 (maybe 2) cups of coffee. Simply put, the French is widely considered to be an extremely boring, drawish line, where your only winning chances are based around your opponent falling asleep and flagging. So what if I told you that you can throw all of your pieces at your opponent's king and you can start a non-theoretical, sound king attack very early in the game? Alright, now I know you are probably thinking alright pianoman4, whoever you are, please put your pot-pipe down before posting, but shockingly, you can achieve a Sicilian-like king attack very early on.
The point of this post is to arm you with a weapon that will allow you to play sharp attacking chess against this line without having to sac material, do GM-level prep or even make serious positional concessions. Here it is.
I will illustrate the plan of this opening with this lightly annotated game against Rybka 4.
What makes this game all the more shocking is the fact that the white pieces were taken by a chess engine! It is comparable to Rybka 4 in strength, and play in a very humanlike style both in quiet positional games, and also in sharper ones such as this one. It sacrifices material in almost every game, and is, (in my opinion) the most useful engine to a human chess player. You can download it for free through this link Vitruvius 0.84b
