Loek van Wely Wins Berkeley International

Dutch GM Loek van Wely won his round-10 game against Denys Shmelov to claim 1st place and a prize of $3000 in the just-concluded Berkeley International Chess Tournament.  Second place and $1500 went to GM Sergey Erenburg, while third and $1000 was awarded to GM Magesh Panchanathan.

Prize money was split between the five winners of the U2500 class.  San Shankland, Daniel Naroditsky, Conrad Holt, Denys Shmelov, and Tatev Abrahamyan each received $200.

There were four $250 winners in U2300: Yian Liou, Bela Evans, Michael Kleinman, and Jarod Pamatmat.

The tournament also saw several competitors achieving norms.  GM norms: Sam Shankland, Denys Shmelov, and Keaton Kiewra.  WGM norm:  Tatev Abrahamyam.  IM norms:  Daniel Naroditsky, Conrad Holt, and Roman Yankovsky.

    Loek must be on some kind of a tour of the US. I wonder if he is breaking even financially? The $3000 goes some way to cover the hotel, food and transportation costs, but for how long?
