According to breaking news from Arun Sharma, an organizer of the Berkeley International Chess Tournament, Sam Shankland (one of chess.com's own) has secured a GM norm with a draw against GM Loek Van Wely in round 9 of that tournament. This is Sam's third and final GM norm.
In addition, SM Denys Shmelov and FM Keaton Kiewra have also earned GM norms.
The Berkeley International ends tomorrow with round 10. After round 9, Loek van Wely is leading the tournament by half a point.
[About 5 minutes ago (4:10 California time) a 4.1 earthquake rattled through the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm sure they felt it in Berkeley. Perhaps it was in response to Shankland's GM norm. Now that Sam is an East Coast student at Brandeis, he no longer has to worry about earth tremors.]
