Xiangqi and Jasmine

When played on the street, xiangqi is fast, violent, and loud...as fast, violent, and loud as any street chess--perhaps more so.

But I like to imagine xiangqi in a garden, with flowers and the sound of a distant fountain.

The position shown on the board is the final one from a game of the 2007 Jiazhou Cup between Wang LiNa and Zhang GuoFeng.  In this position, facing a strong attack, black resigned.

I like the light and the colors a lot, but I would probably resign too if I was forced to play the game sitting in a bush, or with my pieces all facing the wrong way...  Or if the opposing general seemed to have skipped out for a cup of tea...

Is this your board?  I like it.  Simple and dignified.

Ooops, right.  That minister (elephant) should be a general !  (I had been trading pieces around just before I took the photo.)

And yes, that is my own set in my own garden.  I study there a lot and play against the jasmine who seems to be equally good at reading wrong way up.  And he's a tough opponent.
