New iOS App in Store!

Great news from the iOS team! We just pushed a long-awaited update of our app to the Store. It was a long time coming but we're super excited to finally have it done - and it's a HUGE update!

Please note that iPhone 5 support is yet to come (but won't be long) - but in the meantime look at all the goodies!...

- Our app is now multi-lingual! It supports Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish!

(We are now optimizing all screens to handle longer words & phrases. If you find anything that's poorly translated, please email us at "support@chess.com" with the details!)

- Upgrade to premium membership via easy in-app purchase!
- Greatly improved connection to Live Chess server!
- Always see your current rating in Tactics Trainer!
- Challenge your Facebook friends!
- Share your games via Facebook and Twitter!

- A snazzy new Chess Clock utility for your table-top games!
- Analysis boards now have the full move list in online chess: Analyze any previous position!

- View computer evaluation right above the analysis board as you make moves! Perfect for "explaining" the end of a tactics puzzle! (Of course, this feature cannot be used for games in progress.)
- Make moves in "No vacation" tournaments while you are on vacation!
- Online games now split into "Your Move" & "Their Move" sections

- "Recently Finished" list shows games that ended since you last opened the app
- Hear a warning sound at the 10-second mark in Live games
- Check the Videos page for a new "How to Play Chess" video course; it's taught by IM Danny Rensch & FREE for all users!
- Many other minor fixes and interface improvements!

Get it from the App Store!

We hope you enjoy it! (We certainly are!) :)

Till next time!

Please also update the Android version, it's kinda bad. The German translation are google translated and horribly wrong. There are bugs in it . This screenshot shows the illegal first move e2-e4 :P

Very nice update. The  "How to Play Chess" series is actually titled "Learn to Play Chess" in the app.

The language picker should be in an update we hope to have in Store next month. I can't be a lot more specific than that, as it hasn't been tested at all yet. Hopefully, sooner rather than later because we're mostly focussed on tweaks & fixes (& iPhone 5 support!) - and not ambitious new chess features, etc.

Fixing the app to accommodate (longer) translated phrases may have to wait until we can engineer A. a redesigned app and B. a crowd-sourced method for putting translations in the app - similar to what we are doing with the website. That sounds like a lot (and it is), but this is high priority for us right now!

Can you already tell us when there will be the next update with language picker?

Will you fix the non readable letters in German Version (because letters are too big)?

What are you working on in addition?

The inability of Basic users to play Live Chess on an iPhone was the bug we fixed in this update. We're working on other issues now, including an app-specific language picker in Settings.

@DeepGreene which bug will be fixed?

Praise be! Apple has approved at last, and the bug has been squished. Basic members with iPhones, update your apps with extreme prejudice, and once again, huge thanks for your patience on this one.

Not counting the forthcoming critical bug fix update, we're going to be adding a "Language" picker to Settings in the next version.

Is there a way to restore English language in the menu? I don't like Italian translations like "Istruttore Tattico" for Tactics Trainer, "Gioca" (??) for Play in Videos section, etc. Thanks in advance

Many italians are complaining that now they can't play online anymore. Is this true? :(

Fair enough and thanks, to be honest Im an avid Android user and fan, but my Galaxy s was recently stolen so Im forced to use this diabolic idiot phone as a back up untill I can get a new Android, I have messed around a bit in the "open source" area of Android, but seriously cba messin with Apple if you know what I mean! ;) just thought Id ask, not sure on the itunes point, think I might have an old backup somewhere! But failing that I might just have to stp being a stinge and get some newer hardware!! :)

    FREE ANDROID FOREVER!

@spunkmonkey - I don't think we can go back to supporting older versions at this point. New features and optimizations that are pretty core to the new app simply aren't there for us in older versions of iOS.

But perhaps you have the older version on your computer - from having done a "sync" between your device and iTunes (?)

(I can't just "send you a copy" of the older app version. That's possible with Android, but just not how Apple works. Undecided )

No I mean simpily I deleted the app from my phone.

Wanting the app back I went to download via my phone from the app store and It wont let me! I get a little pop up message saying "this app requires iOS 4.3"

I am running iOS 4.2.1 on my iphone 3g which is the highest firmware possibe for this handset.

Chess.com website says the iphone app requires at least iOS 3.0 but since your recent upgrade your new version needs iOS 4.3

If the App store is the only place that I can download this app is it possible you guys can use your magic to tweak the app so it will be compatible with iOS 4.2.1 again, like the previous version??

@spunkmunkey - Are you saying that the App Store allowed you to upgrade to an app version on an unsupported version of iOS? I don't think that's supposed to happen... (For instance, my old iPad 1 won't even try to install recent versions of Cut the Rope...)

Anyway, if that's correct, can you just delete it from your device and reinstall the old copy from iTunes (your computer? There's no way to get an old copy from the App Store for sure.

Hi, Ive got an iPhone 3g running iOS 4.2.1 and been happy playing the app for a while. I needed to reset my phone recentley and didnt back up my Chess.com app, I ended up losing it but thought it wasnt a prob and went to download it again from the Apple Store, since your upgrade Im unable to download to my phone as it says I require at least iOS 4.3!!! I tried upgrading my phone software but iOS 4.2.1. Is the highest it goes on an iPhone 3 g! Can this be remedied please? Or is there somewhere I can download a previous version of the app?? Its a nightmare not playing with app!! Really gutted!! Please help me! :(
