This is a list of chess openings, organised by the Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings (ECO) code. In 1966, Chess Informant categorised the chess openings into five broad areas ("A" through "E"), with each of those broken down into one hundred subcategories ("00" through "99"). The openings were published in five volumes of Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings, with volumes labeled "A" through "E". This is a list of chess openings by the ECO classification.

This is a handy topic, since most of us still refer to openings by name and not ECO code.

interesting also to see the criteria for the system, as in the difference between E00-59s as opposed to E60-E90s, at least interesting to me, perhaps dry for others! never picked up on this system for categorization from looking at my MCO
