A King's Gambit Accepted variation (1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 d5) (ECO classification - C36).  The name comes from a tournament, Abbazia 1912, in which all the games had to be a King's Gambit Accepted.  The event was won by Rudolf Spielmann,  Abbazia is now the city of Opatija in former Yugoslavia, now Croatia.  This variation was played six times at Abbazia, Black winning four times.  The opening is also known as the Polerio variation, Scandanavian Variation, or Modern Defense.  In 1829, Hirsch Silberschmidt published a chess book containing analysis of this variation.  It was probably first played between the Amsterdam Chess Club and the Antwerp Chess Club by correspondence in 1827.

Spielmann was a brilliant GM who appreciated the deep beuty of chess as an art, he once said that he felt sorry for those who didn't know how to play chess...

The 1912 Abbazia tournament was something else. My company Thinkers' Press is publishing an 80 page (or so) book on this event, annotated with help from a few sources. It is remarkable for the number of Muzio Gambits (there was a reward!) and the fact that while Spielmann won the tournament he freaked out and said the King's Gambit should be eliminated from regular tournament play. Of course that admonition means nothing to those today who occasionally play it. If you need more information just contact me. Probably two months or less.

Look at the tactics you will be missing out on if you dont try the Kings Gambit. Will teach you to defend and attack too.
