First international tournament in Germany (from July 18, 1870 to August 4, 1870) and the first to be interrupted by war (Franco-Prussian war).  First place was 3,000 francs. This tournament was the first to introduce chess clocks (20 moves per hour), but the players had the option of using hourglasses.  Adolf Anderssen won the event with 11 points out of 16, followed by Steinitz with 10 ½ points.
