A chess engine is a computer program which is capable of playing a game of chess.  Chess engines do not usually have a GUI (Graphical User Interface) and are designed to be used with a separate GUI.  Commercial chess programs normally have an attractive GUI and at least one chess engine included.

Some famous chess engines include:

  • Fritz
  • Rybka
  • Junior
  • Shredder
  • Hiarcs
  • Crafty
