Florin Gheorghiu, born April 6, 1944, was the first Romanian Grandmaster (1965).  He was world junior champion in 1963.  He was won the Romanian championship 9 times (1960, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1973, 1977, and 1984).   In 1970, he won the Philippines Open with a perfect 11 out of 11 score.  He won the US Open three times in a row (1979 to 1981).   He is a lecturer in languages at Bucharest University and speaks 10 languages.
