Pawn quadrant

The pawn quadrant is a well known rule that every beginner should learn. It can change the course of a game drastically. It also helps you determine if your pawn can promote. This is the rule, sometimes called the square of the pawn. You should make a square with 4 points: The promotion square of a passed pawn, where the pawn is now and make the other points. Here is what I mean:

Note that this rule doesn't work with other pieces or pawns on the board, like if black had a knight, then it would be different.

    I've always heard of this referred to as "the square of the pawn" but it's the concept that counts - not the  name.
