These famous people not only were avid chess players, but established the following ratings.  I'm not sure why, but leftist dictators and revolutionaries seem to be unusually good chess players.

Alan Alda (actor)        1400 rating

Humphrey Bogart             1900 rating

Nicholas Cage (actor)        1500 rating

Fidel Castro (dictator)        1900 rating

Charlie Chaplin (actor)        1400 rating

Ray Charles (musician)       1600 rating

Che Guevara (revolutionary)    1950 rating

Ted Danson (actor)            1400 rating

Peter Falk (actor)                1400 rating

Al Jolson (musician)            1600 rating

Henry Kissinger (politician)    1400 rating

Vladimir Lenin (Russian dictator)     1900 rating

David Letterman (talk show)    1100 rating

Jerry Matthers (the Beaver)    1400 rating

George Pataki (NY Governor)    1100 rating

Arnold Schwarzenenegger    1500 ratingJ

immy Stewart (actor)        1300 rating

The "ratings" should be removed as there is no basis for them.

Pataki RULES ! ;-) and i think that there is one zero missing from ARNOLD's rating.

    It should be 15000!

I wonder over how many games these ratings are based, and how regularly they played, but nice to know anyway.

batgirl has a point. There is no standard for these ratings. There are many rating systems, and they aren't equal. For example, in my city's high school league, I have a rating of 1532 and a USCF rating of 1488. Since these people lived in different countries and different time periods, the rating systems are likely to be different, therefore the numbers don't mean a thing.

If you would all look up like to learn something interresting...Do a google on the Meyer's Brigg's test. Its free online and happens to be used preciding some state jobs here in Pennsylvania.  It's 75 questions long and you will not only get a result of your own type of personality, but see which famous types are in there as well. My point is....that these people that all happen to be dictators and geniuses can usually be found in what's referred to in that test as the intj,istj..all strateggy and militant minds alike...it's bred in the bone...check it out...you will find it intriguing or hogwash depending on you...but the elites wil all be on a short list or neighboring it.shwartzenegger, rumsfeld, colin powell, hitler , augusus ceaser, Eisenhower, thomas jefferson,,,all intjs...im willing to bet the good players in here are as such.

Imagine Ray Charles blind and having a 1600 chess rating.  I watched a GM play a bunch of very enthusiastic kids blindfolded it was something to see.  If my memory serves me right they played more than 20 moves.  Some people just don't have to see the board.  I see it and still I'm blind!  LOL

I´m not certain wether Lenin´s rating was actually that high. True, he won even some GMs, but their victories could have been a hazardous adventure. Then again; you don´t rule over soviets without some capability.
