                 2008 Prairie Scholastic Chess

                       Tournament Series

                                Tournament #1 Summary

                                                    January 19, 2008

We want to first thank everyone for attending our 1st chess tournament at Prairie Middle School.  The turnout exceeded our expectations.  This was in large part to all of the first time tournament players.  Of the 42 entrants, we had new 20 players.  I know we’ll see many of you back on February 23rd and April 26th; 17 of you took advantage of our early registration offer.

This wasn’t only the first tournament for the students; this was the first for the parents and for us directing a scholastic tournament of this type. We wish we were able to chat longer with each of you at the tournament.    Hopefully we got to all of your questions.  If not, always feel free to contact us with any other questions as they arise.

One point is awarded for a win, a half-point for a draw, and no points are awarded for a loss.  With four rounds, the most points that could be scored are four.  We had four players do just that: Trevor Owen (Coolidge), Regan Hodina (Prairie Crest), Jeremy Jacoby (Regis), and Jacob Ulrich (Jefferson).  The winner of the Elementary K-2 section was Nikalaus Huerter (Cedar Valley Christian).  In addition to our individual winners, we tallied the total scores of all players by school.  At the end of the three tournament series, we will be awarding trophies to the top three scoring high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools (both K-2 and 3-5).

The following table summarizes the total scores for each school represented January 19th.

Our next tournament is February 23rd.  This will be a rated event, meaning that membership in the United States Chess Federation (USCF) is required.  Memberships may be purchased at the tournament site.  You may find it easier, though, to purchase membership online at www.uschess.org (assuming you don’t like filling out paper work).  USCF offers many advantages and is the backbone of organized chess.  In addition to providing a rating system, it sanctions Tournament Directors and provides members a quarterly magazine for youth chess.
