St. Charles Chess Club

  • The St. Charles Chess Club has been meeting at the Baker Community Center for over 20 years, every Thursday evening (except for holidays) at 7 pm.  We have 2 teams in the Chicago Industrial Chess League, several USCF rated tournaments a year, and a great ladder system, with the top 8 finishers playing in our annual "Knight's Cup" rated round-robin, and the 9-16th finishers playing in the "Squire's Cup".

Skittles/casual play from 7-8pm, then ladder games (G/90, under 18 has option to play G/60) until 11pm.  All levels are represented, from beginner up to expert. Club dues are $12.00/yr, first few visits free.

    FM Boorchess

Carl Boor, FIDE Master is now offering chess lessons and classes in the Chicago land and NorthWest suburbs.

I am the three time champion of Ohio (USCF 2357) and a very experienced coach (coaching individuals and groups since 1996). Now with my recent relocation, I am eager to meet parents, students and players who share my passion for chess.

I am a coach that cares and understands the need for the student to “discover” their own path to mastery. Everyone thinks that Chess is a hard game! The truth however is that you can reach your potential by receiving a solid foundation in the basic principals and techniques of the three phases of Chess. Once this process begins chess becomes less of a chore and more of an art or “flow experience”.

I pride myself on being able to balance the three phases (opening, middle game, endings) while at the same time creating a fun and rewarding time when conducting a lesson. In addition to my chess knowledge, I have strong classroom management skills and create a structured fun learning enviroment.

    Contact: 614-517-3808, Boorchess@hotmail.com

Lessons and Group classes are available, please contact for arrangements.

I went to this club when I was a kid in the suburbs years ago, back when Irv S. ran it. It's a good one. I have heard Jeff W. is running it now, he's a good guy.

Thanks for the interest in the club, to answer the questions:

The club does not meet on weekends, only on Thursdays at 7pm.

To become a member, all you have to do is show up!  After a few meetings, an officer will hit you up about the $12 annual dues, but it's not a big deal, they don't hound you about it or bar you from attending (you just feel guilty until you pony up :P )

Scott K, I checked your profile, didn't ring a bell, but I haven't been attending regularly in the past year, hope to see you there sometime.

And remember:  always check, it might be MATE!
