IM Alexander Battey

Target Students:

All Skill Levels

About Me:

Hello! My name is Alexander Battey (Bay-tee ). I am a 27 year old International Master (IM) from the United States.  I graduated from the University of Virginia in May, 2010.  Since that time I have been working on chess non-stop.  I moved to Budapest, Hungary in March of 2011 with the intention of becoming an IM.  I started there with a FIDE rating of 2260.  I accomplished my goal exactly one year later in March 2012; after achieving a FIDE rating of 2403 and more than the required 3 IM norms.

I have been teaching chess for over 10 years to a variety of ages and skill levels.  I have never had a student who took lessons from me and did not improve in a substantial way (at minimum moving from a lower to a higher rating class - ie Class B to C).

I am mostly a self-taught player.  The things I learned about chess the hard way (through numerous defeats and blunders) can benefit those who want to take lessons tremendously.  Chess is a practical game, and my methods focus exclusively on an approach that is individual (to the student) and capable of being applied immediately.  For example, we are not going to be searching for the perfect meta-method of analyzing positions (tree method, bush method, other greenery method  ) but instead focus on what factors themselves are important in the position at hand (and in all positions in general).

I am looking for serious students who have a strong desire to improve, and the necessary work ethic to go along with it.  Improvement in chess rarely occurs overnight, and it is often not linear.

I am also offering  training-games at various time controls.  I have been on all the “best” lists on the ICC (my handle on there is HungarianChess), so I hope I will be a worthy adversary for you.

If you are interested in any of my services please send me a message here or even better to aeb8z@virginia.edu for further information.

Languages: English\German\Hungarian (4 year old level Cool )

Online lessons done on ICC or chess.com board while communicating through Skype voice service, or just plain text.

Alex has been my coach for over a month and is making a decided difference in my game. I am now retired, have not played for decades but have always loved the game and now that I have time want to really learn about it. Although my skill level is well below 1600, Alex has provided valuable guidance, insightful and educational game reviews, and homework and study assignments tailored to my weaknesses and improvement needs. He is patient, focused and provides very clear guidance and ideas for improvement. I have been delighted with his coaching and would, without hesitation, recommend him to any level player who is serious about improving their game.

I met Alex from the coaching pages here on chess.com a few months ago and have been taking 2-3 90 minute lessons a week with him ever since. He's a great guy and has become a really good friend. From week one he has overloaded me with study materials and avenues to improve my game. He will analyze games and find your lesson material on his own time and definitely won't penny pinch your time. The lessons are worth more than you will pay for them, especially from a strong IM.

Alex is a great coach! he makes complicated chess topics easy to understand even for a guy like me.  He has developed a very comprehensive program... If you want to improve your game, learn about chess, do not look any further... email Alex, sign up and follow his advice.

I'm having a great experience taking lessons with IM Alexander Battey.  Generally, I do a weekly lesson with him online.  I also had the opportunity to do a couple sessions in person OTB while visiting the VA area.

I recommend him because his chess level is quite high - IM and rated among the top 5-10 players on many chess servers.  What makes him particularly good is how much time he spent teaching himself and taking lessons with GMs in person in Hungary.  This is what makes him a better coach than others; he knows what works.

He is a full-time chess teacher, native English speaker (also speaks some German/Hungarian), and actually cares about your improvement.  This means preparing for the lesson (catering to the student), assigning homework (a necessary evil), and following up with more feedback/instruction.

Try a lesson with him - you will not regret it!

I lived with Alex for 6 weeks in Budapest back in 2011 while he was aiming for his IM title. He gave me chess help whenever I needed or wanted it while I was playing my first OTB tourny and it made a massive difference. I've taken lessons from many titled players on and off since 1998 but nobody has ever made a noticeable jump in rating before. I went from being around 1800 blitz to 2050 in just those 6 weeks, and my understanding of what was important also increased massively.

Alex's prices are a bargain for the increase in playing strength you will likely see over a short period of time.
