About Me:

Experienced Chess Coach.  Primarily working with beginners up to Candidate Masters.  Virginia State 2010 K-5 Scholastic Coach of the Year.   Results?  - best with daily study by students - you set your own speed.  Learn Chess the economical way - via internet and/or with personalized study.  35 years coaching.

"Chess Understanding, derived from within, comes best."

contact:   message me at chess.com  if interested.  available via chess.com analysis in live chess, or via skype.

One user asked:  What can i expect to learn from you?

You will learn to think, plan, anticipate opponent's moves, form alternate plans, and find ways to seize advantages or recover from mistakes.

What I do not teach:  I do not teach anyone to become a "clone" of my style of play, nor would that be good, as most of my students have the potential to add what they get from me, to their own individual genius to become a much better player than I'll ever be.  That is fine with me, and I will not load anyone's wallet for long-term lessons commitment.  You study at your own speed, and learn things as your time allows, not dependent on my time or availability to answer your questions, you will be expected to seek answers you can play and work with, at your level.

Proven techniques:   initial training consists of 3 basic lessons - you learn the fundamental chess concept; applications to ensure you understand how to win, using that concept; and some game planning concepts.  Typically, my students don't need a lot more one-to-one tutoring, to continue their growth, as I provide them with suggested materials to study - all at their own speed.

3 Lessons package - will cover as much as a student can absorb, plus materials via email - to study further and enhance the lessons.  total lesson time, generally 1 1/2 to 2 hours times 3 lessons,   plus at least 30 hours self-study materials to work with at your own absorption speed.

Additional lessons available if interested and after demonstrated ability to apply the techniques in the first three lessons.

if they read, woodshover, they would not post here, they would message me as instructed.

The $20 is for the first lesson.   I tend to avoid more than 3-5 lessons as i do not want anyone to think I'm here to chew up their 'wallet' in endless lessons over several years.   You can learn far more from specific books and from a little guidance and then unleash your own initiative and creative talents.  You will soon find that you can easily handle a game with me, but that is mainly why I do not play against my students - either I am ahead of them or they will crush me, and either way, we (you) don't learn as much as interactive discussion and game analysis.

my own play is often erratic - any more, since I had a medical problem.  However, that does not prevent me from guiding others to deal with the variety of stresses they will encounter.

if you want to see a summary of what we will cover, ask, and I'll add you to my 'group' of students - and you can see the lesson material there.   I cover the material, whether it takes 2 1 / 2 hours or 5 hours or even longer.  although I don't like taking longer, by conducting the lesson - one-to-one - I can go at the student's speed of comprehension.

thus far, all those who tried this haave really liked it.  see note posted by one satisfied student.   I try to equip my students to identify their own shortfalls, and to eliminate their need for repeatedly paying a chess coach for lessons - as I give them a 'variety pack' via email and let them study at their own speed.  Those who follow the directions do quite well, often experiencing a rating rise from 800 to 1800 in less than 4 months - but OTB involves other features that a student (player) needs to understand and work to overcome the negative features there.  the program I use - program of study and development, that is - equips students to deal with all the facets.

a few have lined up for a second lesson, but not many have asked for a third, as they soon realize that they can learn quickly from specific chess books, and the variety of tools for learning provided on this site.

regards,
