I have been passionate about chess since childhood, however, never having the right opportunities or guidance to make sustained progress. At this point of time, I am hoping to have a personal improvement plan which sorts of rigorously tells me how to do things to improve my game and hence rating.

The motivation for seeking this is simple.. without it I get lost after a while and it affects my passion for the game.

It is important to always remember principle # 1 is that tactics is king. Just because you are playing positional you should still do a 20 question Vaughan checklist on tactics each  and every move. If you were good at tactics once you still have that ability - it is like riding a bicycle you don't forget but you can get lazy in positions that appear simple  yet miss a tactic. So a checklist every move  is crucial ie Eternal vigilence is the price of chess!

While opening book memoraization seems not to be to your taste I would still suggest some study then of off the beaten track openings in that case. In addition  continue developing your tactical middlegame skills and most importantly become an endgame expert. Then you will have the skills to overcome those more booked up and who may get a slight advanatge over you in openings. By at least studying off beat openings you will blunt opening experts main strengths.

I am an unorthodox chess player--original in the sense that i never studied book chess. My current USCF standard rating is roughly 1800. My ICC standard rating is 1900. I'd like to perfect my game; however, I don't want to become  a book player. I value originality too much. Could you help with this? What is your rate? USCF rating?
