Target Students:

New to Chess ( <1000), Beginner (1000-1400)

About Me:

Hi! I'm 14 years old, Chinese American, and I was introduced to the chess world when I was 9. I have loved the game since then, and have taken the game very seriously in the past 9 months. I actually did not log on to Chess.com for 9 months to work on my game and have now returned with a much better Elo rating.

I have coached in person recently in local elementary and middle school chess clubs and gaining volunteer hours in the process. Cool I am greatly enjoying working with these students and playing with them and would like to gain experience now as an online chess coach. This is also the main reason I am coaching free.

I will gladly play a takeback, unrated, or rated game with you, or you can send me one of your games and I will analyze and annotate it as best as I can and as time, extracurriculars, and school will allow me. Please message me or leave me a note if you're interested. I will try and take as many "students" as I can manage.

If you'd like to work on something specific (tactics, certain openings, learning to use a chess engine to coach yourself) please mention that in your message and I will see if I'm suited to coach you (remember, I'm only your average USCF Class B player who's also working hard to improve! And I might not be the right coach for you).

My coaching history:

  • 2007 - coached 2nd grade Gifted program students
  • 2008 - coached the local elementary school club
  • 2009 - ditto 2008 and taught 1st grade Gifted with the aid of Chess for Juniors by Robert Snyder
  • 2010 - coached the 5th grade kids and worked with some middle school teachers; started online coaching through ICC
  • 2011 - coached the middle school club and started Chess.com coaching

Overall, I'm a pretty laid-back coach who lets the students decide what they want to learn and study. If you feel like playing a takeback game with me half a year after your first game with me, go ahead. If you want to play a series of rated games against me featuring different openings you're struggling with, go ahead. If you only want me to give you some advice on tactics and maybe a few puzzles, go ahead.

I keep track of all my students in a special coaching group. Students in the group are free to chat and challenge each other too, or post in the forums, or request a lesson on King + Queen vs. lone King endgames.

Thanks, and I hope you understand if I can't take your request due to too little time, not something I'm strong at, etc.

    Hi Jenny,

Do you have the patience to teach a motivated senior citizen?
