About Me:

I have over six years of experience teaching chess to youth, teens, and adults internationally. In a very short amount of time, I established myself as Chess.com's #1-selling chess coach.

I took a 3-year break from competitive over-the-board chess but will resume pursuing a chess master title starting August, 2014.

I am qualified to teach chess to those rated below 1800 USCF/FIDE.

Credentials and Accomplishments:

- Founder and President of Coeur d'Alene Chess Club (2010-2011)

- Coeur d'Alene City Chess Champion 2010-2011

- USCF Certified Tournament Director

- Chess.com Chess Mentor Author

- President of Chess.com University

- Instructor of Chess.com University's best-selling Chess 012, Chess 013, and Chess 014 courses.

- Chess coach of 2013 World Youth Chess Championship contender Rowan James

- Chief organizer for the world's first-ever online chess camp featuring super-GM Boris Gelfand.

- Founder of A+ Tutoring in Moscow, ID

How do online lessons work?

I use Skype along with the analysis board in Chess.com's Live Chess server to teach online. Lesson topics are often pre-determined and may include game analysis, instruction on a specific topic, repertoire-building, and training for improving chess skills.

The best way to learn is from your mistakes. Hence, I decide what to teach based on students' recent slow games. When analyzing students’ games, I pinpoint reoccurring mistakes and instruct based on what I believe is best for the student. I create a well-balanced lesson plan for regular students and help them improve all aspects of their game. Additionally, I create opening repertoires for advanced students.

I will gladly teach any topic a student requests as long as I am confident teaching it. I am a flexible and versatile chess coach. I will teach the way the student wants to be taught.

My hourly rate for chess coaching is $30. These days my time is limited and I primary teach group lessons, Chess.com University courses, and organize Chess.com University events such as our upcoming chess camp

If you have any questions or would like to schedule a lesson, please message me on Chess.com.

Why didn't you play in the Idaho State Championship?

I hear that it is 2-1 in rated OTB play, but 2-2 in tournament play when you include this little gem. I also understand that your rapid improvement after that game helps explain why you have become a skilled coach.

I wonder where you heard that! Who tells you these things ziryab?

Did you also hear that the overall score is still 2 - 1 favoring me? :)

You saw the game where I got his free queen right?

I think that 1869 player might have played 16...Be7. But, the critical mistake must have been several moves earlier. I think Black was a bit ambitious. I hear that he did better the next time you played him. Wink

    Nice game by White!

How does one go about getting an official USCF and/or FIDE rating?

Chess.com's #1 rated coach for reason guys!!!! In my first lessons I have already greatly approved my endgame and learned important principles. I used to play Tawny (the student who posted below me) and win most of our games. Now, I'm LUCKY to win one. That was enough proof for me to spend the money and take my first lesson. Dont worry about the price, because the way i see it, you could go spend 15 dollars on a book and learn a fraction of what you will learn in one hour with GenuisKJ.

I take lessons in person from my local chess club's expert. He doesnt teach me as effectively as KJ does through a chat box. That takes talent, and trust me, he's got it plenty. He knows his stuff and delivers with professional enthusiasm that is easy and fun to learn.

If you are looking for a way to improve your game and raise your rating, look NO further because you have arrived. Thank you KJ!

I'd like to add my comment and express my appreciation for a very gifted chess coach - Kairav (GeniusKJ) who has been coaching me for several months now. I always look forward to our 1 hour live sessions - knowing that it will be jam packed with lots of cool chess moves, neat tactical ideas, and an abundance of chess principles and strategies - all designed to make me a better chess player!

The lessons (I've had 5 so far) are always professionally structured and well organized (on par with a college course). The homework assignments (chess mentors and video's) strengthen my understanding of the material discussed and also reinforces the concepts presented during the lesson.

My present situation regretfully only allows me to take a lesson every 2 weeks - but seriously - I have learned more in the last 3 month's studying with GeniusKJ than I have in years. The benifit of studying with a skilled, motivated chess coach (with an obvious passion and love for the game) has helped me immensely - and has motivated me to study and learn a lot more! Without a doubt - the enthusiasm, knowledge of the game and sense of humor that Kairav demonstrates during the lesson has motivated me to devote as much time as I possibly can to my chess studies.  I would highly recommend this gifted chess instructor for anyone serous about  learning chess.  For myself, all I can say is that it's been truly awesome! Cool

You've done a lot with me and it's improved my understanding of openings( such as sicilian and king's gambit), development and initiative, rook endgames, opposition.  also my tactics have improved with your coaching. All this is over the course of 6 months approximately.   For what I'm getting, I would pay 100 dollars per hour.  I will be happy to continue working with you.  I've increased in strength too, I started as a 100 or so strength on chess.com when we started and now I'm 1300.

I found the coaching sessions with Kairav very useful in gaining better understanding of the game. While there are many chess courses on chess.com, having a coach who would guide me in learning chess proved to be invaluable. As an added bonus, Kairav invites his students to join Kairav Chess Academy where there are other resources including a free lesson on Sicilian Najdorf Defence which I found well-presented and very useful in learning this important opening. Having already taken three lessons with kairav, I would highly recommend him for anyone looking to increase their knowledge of chess.

I'm still in the 1200s but I am gaining so much from your teaching and every note that I take is a step to achieving my goal.  For this, I would like to say that I appreciate this teaching and despite the difficulties of the mail in Canada at this moment, I am happy that you will be patient enough during the time of receipt to receive it.

Excellent teaching at a reasonable rating. The weekly homework really helps give me something to work on. Rather than spending hours of work on something that isn't improving my game, I have specific things to go over. Highly recommended.

I usually play blitz, current at the 1300-1400 level. Over the  past month or so Kairav fixed some of my more glaring weaknesses and has given me a far greater understanding and appreciation of the game. He has a good sense of humor and is very active and accessible on the site. Note: "for best results" you actually have to do homework once in a while.

Coach K is thorough and articulates the complexities of chess in an easy to understand manner. I look forward to our lessons and am excited to gain clarity after each lesson. He is ready to feed knowledge if you have the hunger! I enjoy chess more now that my strategic and tactical insights are growing. His rates are very reasonable and his scheduling is very accommodating. My progress is easily mapped in my games now. It is way more fun having a larger bag of tricks! Thanks Coach!
