Matt Anzis

Target Students:

New to Chess ( <1000), Beginner (1000-1400), Tournament Level (1400-1800)

About Me:

Hi, my name is Matt. If you are rated anywhere below 1800, I can help you improve your chess. I have been where you are, and I know how to get you to the next level. I offer in-person (IA only) and online lessons. If that sounds good to you, email me or for further info check out my full description below:

Why I am right for you:

I am only 18, but I believe that my relative youth is an advantage. In my 9 years of chess (about 1.5 years per class) I have gone from a complete novice to a 2100; I have been where you are and struggled to get to the next level. I was never a wunderkid or a prodigy: I worked hard, struggled to get to the next level of understanding, and overcame psychological issues such as nervousness, self doubt, and fear of losing. Long story short, I know what it takes to improve at your level because in the past decade, I was there myself.

My Coaching Method

I am a good coach because I have a broad knowledge of the game, I can define what I know, and I can pass it on to you. I work with you, not just tell you what to do. Here is a summary of my chess knowledge:

I have a strong understanding of positional chess, but I recognize that everything is based on tactics. I say openings are nice to know, but memorizing lines is unnecessary unless you are a strong master. Tactics, positional ideas, and creativity are much more important. If you are a beginner and this is going over your head right now, relax! That's where the "pass it on to you" part comes in! I will start at your level and build you up.

WARNING: Do not expect results overnight! It will take some effort and some time to improve.

Lessons:

My standard rate for lessons is $30 per hour. However, I offer negociable introductory rates so you can decide if my coaching is something that will work for you.

I can do lessons in person or on ICC. I am especially interested in giving lessons to Iowans.

My Qualifications:

  •  I am a USCF and FIDE 2100
  • I am the 4-time High School Champion of Iowa
  • I tied for 5th place at the 2010 Denker with a >2300 performance rating
  • I scored 3/6 at Open Section of the 2012 National Open with a >2300 performance rating. the tournament included over 30 titled players, 10 of which were GMs.

Contact me at manzis64@yahoo.com for to set up a lesson or if you have any questions. We will work out an introductory rate that will let you try my lessons. I love chess, and love to teach it; money is of a lower priority.
