About Me:

I am a 23-year-old International Master and professional chess coach. My FIDE rating is 2438 and I have two IM norms. In addition to giving high quality private lessons, I work as professional lecturer for many popular sites, including Chess.com, ICC, ChessBase, ChessLecture.com, and ChessCube.com. I have extensive knowledge of openings, typical middlegame positions, endgame planning, competitive chess psychology, and many others. Furthermore, I use a new flexible method of teaching that allows each of my students to receive the most important skills they need for the moment to excel in tournaments and casual games, while correctly improving their chess. I believe chess is a good way for anyone to strengthen their character, learn how to make important decisions for limited time, or just have a lot of fun. I welcome you as my student and will do my best to assist you within hours of contacting me! Below, I have included more detailed information on my training methods and services I provide to everyone interested in training with me!

A Personalized Approach to Training...

On this page, as well as on TigerLilov.com, I offer a number of services that my students use to boast their chess training and improve their general playing strength. For each of my new students, I prepare a free personalized chess training program which serves as the main guide for me on how and what to teach this student at any given point, so that s/he improves visibly and steadily over the course of our training. This personalized training program is based on my student’s chess background, sample games, strengths and weaknesses, as well as style and level of play, chess psychology, and learning preferences among many others. When new students enrol to take online lessons with me, I first collect and analyze all the information and sample games they submit via e-mail before I build their personalized training programs and make important decisions on the course of study we are to take, so that we observe the best results and highest performance over the board.

There IS such thing as free training...

While my students work on their personalized training programs with me, they are entitled and often swarmed with a number of free services and complementary training materials I am always happy to provide for free. Being quite ambitious myself, I believe in achieving the desired results rather than performing my job alone. When I teach a student that aspires to improve and does so much to achieve their dream of becoming a master, I want to help them get closer to their goal faster. Here are some of the services I do for free every day:

  • Free Personalized Chess Training Programs for anyone interested in training with me

  • Free Opening Repertoire Screenings

  • Free Recent Games Reviews and Analyses via e-mail

  • Free Thematic Homework Assignments after every lesson

  • Free Bonus Lectures and Training Videos sent by request or whenever I believe a student needs to work more on a given area

  • Free 24/7 Online Support (Skype, E-mail, & Chess.com) for anyone having questions on their chess training and practice, upcoming tournaments and tough matches, recent games and training exercises, or anything chess-related that I can help my students with

  • Free Complementary Training Materials to each of my regular students depending on their training program needs and objectives

Training Focused on Problem Areas...

I am happy to provide training to anyone based on their problem areas in chess. Here is only a short list of the most common topics I cover with my students:

  • Building (or Improving) a Complete Opening Repertoire for White and Black based on Student’s Personal Style of Play and Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Creating an Opening Outline for Smooth Piece Development in Unfamiliar Openings

  • Rediscovering Defense as a Powerful Tool for Saving Hopeless Games

  • Improving Tactical Vision and Calculation Ability

  • Boasting Positional Play and Developing the Right Habits for Quiet Positions

Had first lesson today. In terms of professionality and content, Valerie is several orders of magnitude above the typical good chess coach. It's not even close. He should be coaching the coaches. Watch his videos you'll get a feel for how much information he has to share and how gifted he is at sharing it.

I had my first lesson today. I loved that he explained everything in a clear manner, and he is very knowledgeable. I had watched (and own) several of his Chessbased videos, and he's one of my favorites. Not only was he able ot explain things easily-but, also he provided additional information in .DOC format, and additional training + homework. He's deffinitely a very proffesional trainer. I would definitely recommend his services to any improving player.

Great chess coach, 5/5. Funny and very kind. Not to mention talented. Noticed results immediately after first lesson. You get a sense that he is invested in your improvement, and he takes the time to go over key problems that recur throughout your games. I'm looking forward to becoming a much better player as a result of these lessons.

In my opinion, the best chess couch around. I have talked to a few coaches on here, Valeri is really easy to talk to, very responsive, and has a great personality, which I have found pretty rare in people. (His english is perfect too!) The lessons I have gotten are the 30 minute lessons, usually we go over games I lost, and he very clearly points out the reasons I lost, the positional elements of the game, the possible tacics against me I let a possibility on accident, and ever since I have been having lessons, I notice alot more while I play. I started chess a year and some months ago, and have lessons every couple weeks with him, and I'm over the 2000 rating area right now, and climbing still hopefully haha. He gives homework positions ater lessons for you to work on, which is really nice, and best of all, if you know you are weak in a certain area, like tactics, or planning, or even something specific like closed positions, certain opening structures, he will help very much. Even sends videos on openings which I found pretty nice of him. Recommended!

Great teacher, really breaks down what you need to learn and how you can learn it. His style of teaching is very fluid, very to the point. I learnt more about my own chess ablilities in the half our lesson than I have in all the game review and self analysis i have done alone.

    again top notch teacher!

I've just received the first session from Valeri, and I can say that this is a really personalized training program. He has identified my weaknesses so now I can work inmediately on them. When you only study books, those cover the whole world of chess, but don't work over your weaknesses, wich is what a great coach such as Valeri can do for you. Highly recommended!

I recently started taking lessons with Valeri so I'd like to give a review of how things have gone do far.

Before the first lesson he asked me to send him 8-10 of my games and from them he made a plan for my improvement. In the first lesson we went through some of those games and he pointed out places where I went wrong. He didn't just identify bad moves but also the wrong thinking that led to them which means I can apply what I learned to other situations. Subsequent lessons have been based partly on his homework assignments but also games played between lessons. As well as showing what I do wrong in games he also gives me a lot of advice about correct thinking and planning. He has been happy to take questions between lessons and if the answer wasn't short he has made audios so that he can give fuller and more detailed explanations. I already feel like I have learned a lot although I am well aware that these are early days.

There are plenty of strong players offering their services as chess coaches but being a strong player doesn't mean someone is a good teacher. Valeri is rated 2400+ but he also knows how to teach and how to teach well. I will perhaps give an update a few months down the line but already I feel that my understanding of chess is improving.

I would gladly recommend Valeri as a chess coach to anyone who is serious about improving.

I highly recommend Valeri Lilov’s chess lessons.  Valeri is personable and professional in his approach.  As a beginner, I truly did not know where to start until I encountered Mr. Lilov.  After he reviewed some of my recent chess games, he recommended books to study and outlined a plan of study.  Based on his observation of how I played openings, he provided a number of standard openings I could use.  I found this very instructive and immediately began to have more confidence in my chess games.

I recently took his live online chess lesson where we discussed a recent game of mine.  Through this activity, Valeri pointed out where I made the correct moves and how to avoid some basic errors.  The lesson was recorded and sent to me for further review and study.  He also sent along some chess exercises for further study and application of how to plan and execute my chess play.   Between lessons, Valeri is available, via email, to answer questions about chess lessons and other chess topics.  It motivates me to have Valeri on call to answer my concerns as I study chess.

FM Lilov is a pleasure to work with. He has a systematic approach to teaching absolute beginners like me (I'm sure the same is true with advanced players). After a few scattered lessons with him (I admit I'm lazy) my blitz rating increased from ~ 700 to ~ 1300 in less than a year. Thanks to his advice and guidance which I try as much as possible to recall whenever I play.

Mr. Lilov is a great coach who is willing to listen and answer his students questions, Which is a good quality in a good teacher.  He is very knowledgeable in all aspects of the game. He never holds back when he needs to give good advice in what you need to do in order to improve.    His services are great! For example, when you take a lesson you have the option of getting your lesson recorded, which I think is great because you get to review your lesson more than once and get to understand more of what you learned.  Another great thing about taking lessons with Lilov is that he provides homework and other materials which help reinforce your lessons.   I highly recommend Mr. Lilov as a Chess coach.  "See for yourself Mr. Lilov is a down to earth man but in the Chess jungle he is truly a beast of a Tiger".

Valeri Lilov has found his true calling in life, that of a chess teacher. He is just as excited about your chess as you are and he is very friendly and easy-going. He makes the maximum use of technology to ensure your time together is spent efficiently. Training with him is fun and effective at the same time. Valeri doesn't teach you to find the best moves, he trains your mind to think about chess in the proper way. Of course, this takes some time and you need to be commited and do your part. But soon you will see the results of your work.
