One of my early books, when I began playing chess.  The book mainly focus on the concept of back rank mates with at least 300 examples and the readers decided the moves.

Slow at first, but it's a great book. Really opens your eyes if you are fairly new to chess.

I think it's definitely a good book for a beginner - really just working with diagrams, don't have to think about notation etc.

There are a few that have negative views - read some on amazon.com - i.e. it's not really written by Bobby Fischer, too simple etc.

But when I read it when I was getting back into chess years ago, I found it worth the time.

Really good read- pretty easy to get through.  Perhaps today with computers availible to alliow you to do drills the book is not as relevent.  This said I feel that this is an excellent tool.  I googled the book and found it to be selling for its list price $ 7.95 US  so dont get ripped off by someone selling it as a collectors item.

I would have to say, if you are a beginner at chess. Buy this book. It has helped me out so much. The only complaint that i have is that I wish there was more stuff in it!

I'm just starting to really learn chess and this is a great book for novices who want to go from the basics to thinking about the game.

The examples and excercises are really contrived, making it difficult to see how to develop the strategy to "end up" in the mating positions presented to the reader.

However, it's a great stepping point into the game of chess and is really hard to put down. I whizzed through it in a couple days and have reviewed various sections from time to time.

I highly recommend it to new players who are confused or overwhelmed by the expansive collections of more advanced material.

I have this book.  I have to say it's cheap, well written, and I have found winning moves in games specifically because of things from this book. So how could I know recommend it?

Best beginners book ever. When I find them in the used bookstores I buy them to give away. Fischer used to have a column in Boys Life magazine a long time ago When I was scout. He was a good teacher.

This is a godd book for learning chess and some tactical moves, but it has not been written by Bobby Fischer himself:

BOBBY FISCHER TEACHES CHESS was first published in 1966, when the great player was still a young man seen as a prodigy newcomer in professional chess circles. The first thing one has to realize about the book is that it is essentially ghostwritten--a long tradition in chess primers and accessories--so those hoping to understand something of Fischer's playing peculiarities will be quite disappointed. The book is the creation of Stuart Margulies and Donn Mosenfelder, two educators and chess afficionados who wanted to create a chess primer using the then-new concept of "Programmed Instruction". In spite of the fact that the book is an experimental teaching tool created by two academics, it is written as if Fischer himself were speaking, which makes for a rather incongruous style.

The only book written by Fisher is: My 60 Memorable Games

interesting (I read it as a beginner), but I would say probably one of the least helpful books I've read as far as actually helping me improve my game.  I think it might've helped me avoid a back rank mate or two playing against my brother, but really... not very good.

I once got hold of the book but did not put a lot of importance on it as I was already an intermediate player at that time.  But now that I am inclined to chess teaching, I would like to put to use the programmed instructions used in that book.  May not be the best chess positions but it would certainly serve as a good model to come up with more positions designed for step-by-step chess instruction.

This was my first chess book and a good one for a raw beginner. This is a book on checkmate and nothing else with puzzles of the white to move ect. I was so excited on my first quuen sac that I learned in this book.
