I bought this book awhile ago, but haven't started reading it until recently. Believe me, I regret it. This is an amazing book. I believe this book really shows the reader how interesting the play of Tal is. I would give this book five stars, except for one thing- the binding is bad. I've had about 5 or 6 pages fall out. Has this happened to anyone else? Let me know.

4 stars.

This book is an excellent read. I picked up a lot of ideas from studying his games against Botvinnik.

Yeah, everyone knows about Tal's reputation as a player, and  know exactly what they're going to get concerning his games. What makes this book a cut above the rest is his humour, passion, enthusiasm and honesty.

At one stage, after another operation, rumours spread that Tal had suffered his final 'defeat' and had passed away..........

The tournament about which I had been dreaming began in Tbilisi roughly a month after the operation and I played there with particular pleasure. I don't know whether this really happened, but later I was told that when I sacrificed my queen against Suetin, the following comment was made: 'not bad for a dead man, don't you think!'

Basically that's this book in a nut shell - queen sacrifices and funny anecdotes :)

I started reading this book right when I got it, and it was time well spent!  Many of the games were so great, I stood up until two o clock to read.  I have always been a Tal fan, even though several of my sacrifices are unsound.  When I finished the book, my rating shot up three hundred, and I went back and reread some games from openings that my opponents usually play and my rating burst another one hundred fifty points!  I recomend this book to everybody!

I have hundreds of chess books, but this one is my great love. Tal not only was a chess genius. He was a brilliant writer, too.

This is one of the greatest game collections out there. Tal's games are an enigma and what better way to study his games with Tal himself as your mentor. I love before each chapter he explains a little about his life in the format of an interview. His commentary and analysis to his 100 games are top notch, you wont be bored here by long and boring mind numbing analysis. Tal is concise and to the point giving analysis at key tactical moments in his games. A must have for the attacker.

argued by some as the best book in chess ever. the reason is that 1) its good (often tactical) chess! 2) Tals writing style is very personal and often very humorous (some of the things he write is so funny that you need to take a break just to laugh for a while) and 3) he is a very good writer (probably one of the few chess "writers" who can really write as he had a degree in literature).
