A classic, and for a reason.  A great book for players just starting out.  Chernev explains each and every move in plain english.

It's a great book, I have nothing but praise for it.  It's helped me a lot, and I haven't even finished it yet.  An annotation of every move, and diagrams every 8-9 moves.  Definitely worth every penny.

I read this over 40 years ago, and it's still one of the best books for the player just past the beginning stage. Some new books that are similar and equally good are Understanding Chess: Move by Move by John Nunn, Chess: The Art of Logical Thinking by Neil McDonald and Unbeatable Chess Lessons by Robert Snyder.

This is an excellent book for beginning chess players. I have all my middle school (7&8th grade) chess students read through and study the games in this book.

A more modern, but similar book, is John Nunn's "Understanding Chess Move by Move". It uses more recent games than Chernov's book and is at a slightly more advanced  level.

The only thing I have ever heard about this book that is NOT positive is that Chernev will sometimes say a move is best (i.e. e4), then later say another move is best (i.e d4). Consistency...?

Just started reading through an old copy of this my dad had. Fantastic for any beginner, especially in improving how you develop your pieces at the start of a game.

This is an excellent book, probably one of the best out there. Finished it in a few weeks, and it certainly helped my performance. I recommend this to people from beginner to expert.

I bought this book recently, and I wish I'd bought it sooner!

For a beginner this is the perfect book. It's enthusiastic, concise, passionate, funny and it explains any chess jargon as it goes along. It's difficult to believe that this was originally published around 50 years ago as the language is so fresh and vivid.

Chernev really injects his love of the game into the prose, making for an engrossing read. He also doesn't get bogged down listing too many "best move" variations: normally, he will just state that a move was a mistake, and then go on to explain why this is, and how best to capitalise on it. (However, in a particularly juicy endgame he cannot contain himself from listing the myriad of finishes on offer to the almost-victor.)

For sub-1200 players who are having difficulty planning their opening/midgame this book is invaluable, as it explains what weaknesses you should concentrate your pieces on. (Though, I should point out that this is not a book of openings.)

All that needs to be said further is that this book should be the cornerstone for any fledging chess library!

One of Irving's rare good works on chess.  This is the book I cut my chess teeth on, and now I am a National Master.  Truth to tell, I don't think I would have been able to do it without this fantastic beginner's book.

This book and a Chess Challenger 7 level computer are totally responsible for getting me into chess. I was lucky this was the first chess book I ever picked up. Chernev's enthusiasm is contagious. Best book a beginner could buy. "Most Instructive Games" book is the next one to get by Chernev.

ive got 32 chess books all trying to tell you what to do and why but this is the best of all the books. the only thing is the games are a bit dated. but if my two younger children want to learn chess then after the basics this is the book to go by.
