Very nice book to learn the game and have a general overview about tactics, strategy. Exercises are very useful and I found some of them really tough. A lot to learn also in the exercise solutions. Definitely a good book to start.

Yeah, this is where I started. As a beginner, I used to find chess books a bit daunting. Heavy with long lines and variations. Nothing like that here, a user frendly book that puts you on the right track and increases your interest.

Though I am a beginner player, I did go through so many other books before zeroing on this one. The book's title says it is for 'idiots' like me :) But I disagree with it. I feel it contains some really sensible tactics and strategies even for advanced players as a refreshment. I would highly recommend it to anybody who wants to start playing a bit stronger.

Thorough, but a bit intimidating toward the end.  A good second book following Seirawan's Play Winning Chess.

Excellent book for a beginner - however, if you have experience un chess at all, I don't think you will get anything out of it. It really is for chess novices. It does that well though!
