+++++/- (2 votes)

Description:

A unique look at the history of chess and how the game has influenced philosophy, art and politics.  Includes illustrations from the lives of Mohammed, Napoleon, Benjamin Franklin, Norman Schwarzkopf and others.  It also offers a unique analysis of "The Immortal Game" Kiezeritzyky (sp.?) vs. Anderssen in 1851.  An easy read and enjoyable for anyone who loves chess or history.

    This is a great introduction to the history of chess. David Shenk takes the reader on a tour of chess from its beginnings in India to the modern day man against machine era. This book is written clearly and sourced extremely well. As well as a review of it's history, he also walks the reader through a play by play analysis (however, no a very in depth one) of the immortal game between Anderssen and Kieseritzky in 1851.

    This is a must read for new comers to the game or anyone interested in the history of chess.
