Description:

In this instructive and entertaining book for players of all ages, the legendary David Bronstein, artist and sorcerer of the chessboard, invites the reader to become his apprentice. Bronstein begins with 40 recommendations for the chess novice and then develops the reader's chess skills with examples from his own games, of which there are 222 played between 1938 and 1995 - a career spanning 57 years! Although the book has been written primarily for amateurs, with easy-to-understand commentaries, more experienced players - yes, even grandmasters - will also enjoy Bronstein's many interesting stories and the way in which he waves his magic wand. This is an unconventional book, probably quite unlike anything else the chess world has seen to date, but then again, the main subject is also quite unique!

Cleverly presented, these are extremely entertaining and instructive.  You will not easily forget the lessons in this book - and will find improvements to your style and tactics as well as strategy improvements when you play.    Ideas will simply 'pop' into your head - without consciously seeking them after working through these games and stories.   (much the same effect you may find after reading through Simon Webb's 'CHESS FOR TIGERS'.)

Bronstein is one of the sharpest and creative players of all time, and this is his main attempt at a collection of games.  50 of the games are annotated in fair depth; others just note a critical combination, or have diagrams, and some are just a straight game score.  Tom Furstenberg does succeed in getting Bronstein to talk a bit about his life and his match with Botvinnik.  This book should appeal to players who enjoy enterprising attacks and sharp combinations.
