these are great chess pieces for the money you can't go wrong, and as for the complaints about the felt being loose thats nothing take a couple bucks from the money you saved on these great pieces go to your local craft store and buy some sticky felt and make some new better quality felt pads for your set  problem solved.

Not too long ago I picked up a plastic set of House of Staunton Collector chess men with a 3 3/4" king. Other than a very small glob of glue on one of the rooks, presumably from attaching the felt base, and was easily removed, the set was perfect.

I guess I am spoiled by the high quailty House of stanton pieces. Because these are crap.  I had to glue the felt back on about half the pieces and the weights even came lose on a few of them. For a couple of more bucks you can get something much better elseware.

This set is also known as the "Big Knight" set and is truly a joy to play.  The detail of the Knight is very good for a plastic set and the triple weight feels great.  If you're looking for a nice, heavy weighted set, you truly can't go wrong with this one.

I got these pieces in a set including a carry all bag and board. I appreciate the size of the pieces (they make regular club pieces look tiny in comparison) and as a club player, I love the distinctiveness of this set. Should I leave it to play another game, it is unlikely to be mistaken for a communal set and thrown in with the club's sets when I am not looking.

The only complaint I have about these pieces were that the felt on the bottom of the pieces did not seem to be well placed/glued, although this may have been just a problem with my order and was only on a few pieces.

Overall, a great set of pieces.

Hooper, no you do not need a plastic chess set.  You need a chess set of Staunton design, king 3 1/2 - 4 " high and a board with squares 2 = 2 1/4 " or something like that.  The cheapest way to meet the requirements is to get the "tournament special", which is why tournament players  look like they have pretty uniform equipment.  You may bring any set that falls within tournament specs.  So, if you have expensive wooden set and board, you can bring it to and use it for a tournament.

Equipment that is excluded is stuff that you can find at the five and dime or pharmacy.  Little magnetic sets,  Plastic sets that try to look Staunton, but the king looks more like the tail section of a bomb.  The common denominator of these mass market sets is that they are all pretty much guaranteed to be too small.  Most people also stick to the tournament special because their precious wooden sets would have to be grieved if they misplaced a pawn, broke a bishop or forgot the whole set at a diner during the lunch break.

What I mean by Staunton is a chess set that looks like a chess set.  Not Civil war soldiers, not Star Trek characters, not Sesame Street critters ...

I have bought this chess set from a tournament I went to. This set has good wieght distributed throughout the piece. This is better because if it falls it won't dislodge the weights like the other weighted sets do. This is a great deal.

Were I in the market for a plastic chess set, I'd certainly consider theses. Do you need to have a plastic set for club/tournament play?

These pieces are beautifully weighted and play very well.  I own two sets of them and wish I had an excuse to buy more!  They are worth the few extra $$$ to get them, and they are stil a bargain.
