I'm just learning how to play chess and I have found it very easy to follow.  It's great for a beginner like me who knows a little bit of the game but not enough to say I know how to play.  Multiple choices for pieces and boards are great.  Also the 3 different choices in how to learn the game is helpful.  Well worth the 20 bucks.

Chessmaster is one of those pieces of software that you probably are familiar with, it's been around for quite awhile, the engine is rated high enough to beat 99.9% of all users but you can pick from opponents that are closer to your own rating.

While I like Chessmaster I don't use it to play against, I use Chessmaster for the lessons by Larry Christiansen and Josh Waitzkin, both are accomplished players (Larry is a GM and Josh an IM) in the Chess world and you can pick up some pointers by watching their lessons, also included are chess puzzles by GM John Nunn, an endgame quiz by GM Larry Evans and Bruce Pandolfini filling in other areas.

For those wanting to practice their Openings, that's included although the program just touches on them.

There is a feature that allows you to play online chess against other Chessmaster users but when I tried there was only a handfull of players online, your much better off going with the Fritz software or sign up with ICC or FICS if your looking for online play.

It does have a significant database of chess games, there again your alot better off buying Chessbase as it contains just as many games and offers just a ton of additional features that are out of the scope of Chessmaster.

I highly recommend Chessmaster 10th Edition as the lessons are worth the price for what you will get out of it.

This was the program I used to teach my son. For $20 it has a tremendous amount to offer those just starting out. It is probably the defacto chess program in my son's chess clubs that everyone seems to start off on. The tutorials are great and I like using the game analysis for analysing my games and my son's. I haven't been able to export the annotation but I copy and paste into ChessCat.

I would have liked to see more games in the database and with more commentary but for $20 what more can you expect? A fun thing to do is upload famous games for analysis.

The program is buggy so make sure after you purchase it that you download the patch. You can still expect a few crashes now and then.

Chessmaster is a very useful tool for improving your skills, especially when you're a beginner. The Chessmaster Academy in particular is very helpful. The great number of (A.I.) opponents to choose from is also a big plus.

Purchased the software quite recently and have been using it ever since. It's been great for a beginner player like me. Am yet to crack the software as a serious chess pro, but would like to do that someday. Does anyone else feel that the computer player profiles are a little under-rated, or is it just me who thinks the software is playing stronger than what the rating indicates? Well, in any case, it is a good companion for me to play against, at least for now :)

I just got chessmaster 9000, and really like the lessons on it as well.  Does anyone know the differences between the two programs???

This program is awesome! You can get lessons from begginer level to 2000 rating, and I really liked the personalities of great masters. Only minus is that anything was really changed since Chessmaster 9000. I didn't experienced any bugs.

Chessmaster 10th edition is great fun and is now cheaper ($10 at a national chain of office supply stores) since there is a newer version available. If you don't mind being a version behind, you can have great lessons and a staggering variety of opponents for very little money. I've bought a few of these to give away as chess club prizes. [Note: After installing, I went online to get the latest program patches, and I haven't had any crashes.]

Chessmaster 10 is a very solid program.  The academy lessons are very helpful for visual learners.  It has re-stimulated my interest in chess as well.

I found Chessmaster easier and more intuitive to use than Fritz. I would recommend it for beginning to intermediate players. If you work through all the lessons you'll soon be beating about 90 percent of the players at your club.

I have used both Fritz and CM. Seems that CM is user friendly and people seem to be getting more use out of it. Fritz has great features but seem to be hidden.

There is really a lot in this program. I have had it for a while and I still use it all the time. It has tons of openings, historic games, and lots of helpful puzzles and tips in the academy section. I would easily recommend this to anyone.

having to use cd evertime i use the puter is very limiting , lose or damage the cd and you are s.o.l . ubi soft is as cold as ice on support. i have 3 versions and agree with most of the positive comments listed above , however the cd refresh is frustrating must keep it with laptop, oops if your out of town and its with desktop.

I have been playing the Chessmaster series for a long time and CM X is definitely my favorite one. Between the puzzles and the lessons you can take and try to solve, the range of opponents is suitable for any skill level. I have downloaded PGNs from many sites and watch games that have taken place in the early 1900s, even further back. You can sit back and watch a game between two GMs and analyze it afterwards and take notes on it and it will definitely improve your game.
