Description:

In May 1997 Garry Kasparov, widely regarded as the greatest chess player the world has ever seen, played Deep Blue - a hulking one and a half ton IBM supercomputer. As it played out in the media, this was a chess tournament and scientific experiment that would question our dominance as the most intelligent entity on the planet. Capturing people's imaginations, the outcome of this 'Man vs. Machine' battle was stunning. To win the match, the computer did what many thought impossible at the time - it appeared to think like a human...This is a fantastic documentary on the Kasparov vs. Deep Blue match - you don't even have to be a chess player to find it fascinating! Full of conspiracy and controversy, this movie will make you think deeply about chess and big business.

It was an all right movie. I think they tried to make it seem scary.

SPOILERS AHEAD....

...

Gotta remember: this is a documentary. I thought it was great. The creepy music was cool. It gave a whole different spin to the subject. It really added to the "conspiracy" tone of the film. I like Kasparov, and I happen to believe that he was cheated. I think there *were* some guys selecting a few important moves before the computer result was revealed. IBM was just too secretive about its logs and data and the room, etc. Too many things were weird. Any way...it's just a game right? Right? ... right? NO!  It is CHESS!

I really enjoyed this film, even if Kasparov's accusations have largely been proved to be without substance.  The psychological pressure that Kasparov was under during the match was intense and this film captures the mood perfectly.

Highly recommended!

I personally thought this was one of the worst documentaries I've ever seen.  I was excited to see it as I am a computer scientist as well as a chess player, but it was terrible.  They played up the conspiracy theory so much that it seemed ridiculous by the end of it.  It was very light on details, and heavy on 'scary music'.  Argh.

Pretty good. It is difficult to make a documentary about chess/computer chess and have it be of some general interest. I think this one does about as good a job as you can do given the subject matter. The whispering commentary is annoying though

the chess automaton is a joke. he looks like Zoltan. the silly fortune telling machine of the 70's. maybe that's why deep blue won.

Kasparov, the greatest of all time, bar none had strong reason to believe that in game 2 that the "machin" playes a very like karpov move and i thought that he really couldnt recover as there must have been some human intervention and IBM didnt share its logs.Kasparov is a tireless servant in the political arena and will be idolized by me.Go Garry!!!

Interesting movie that leaves you with mixed emotions... There is the World Champion, the Fallen Man, who was seemingly defeated more by his own nerves and conspiracy-suspecting paranoia, the arrogance of "How can you/dare you do this to me???" than "Da Dumb Computer". You wonder whether his entire strategy was about playing "anti-computer" moves and believing that that is all what it takes to win. You also wonder whether the first match, where the computer played terribly was in fact just a ploy, a trap to fan Kasparov's ego even more, make him more arrogant and self -confident, so after the slap-effect of the second game he would be destroyed by the incomprehensible contrast of playing ability. He doubts everybody except himself. He went through, obviously, his own Kubler-Ross stages and by the end (actually shown at the beginning of the movie) he is just bitter and cynical. Then, there is the "Geek Team"; a chip designer, a programmer, a GM and a lot of weird things. What was this whole security and secretiveness about? Why they did not come forward with their logs? Joel Benjamin brags about how much he "taught" the computer, but really, why did it play so bad at the beginning? Yeah, yeah, the IBM stock jumped this and this making this and this million in stock value, but what was the benefit of the whole research project beyond that? You make up your mind that more than likely there was a human touch involved in making the moves that brought down the Champion. And yes, the music is creepy and the whispering voice is annoying.
