Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine on DVD

  • Studio: Other
  • Run Time: 1 hour 25 minutes
  • Format: DVD
Description:

In May 1997 Garry Kasparov, widely regarded as the greatest chess player the world has ever seen, played Deep Blue - a hulking one and a half ton IBM supercomputer. As it played out in the media, this was a chess tournament and scientific experiment that would question our dominance as the most intelligent entity on the planet. Capturing people's imaginations, the outcome of this 'Man vs. Machine' battle was stunning. To win the match, the computer did what many thought impossible at the time - it appeared to think like a human...

This is a fantastic documentary on the Kasparov vs. Deep Blue match - you don't even have to be a chess player to find it fascinating! Full of conspiracy and controversy, this movie will make you think deeply about chess and big business.

Pretty good. It is difficult to make a documentary about chess/computer chess and have it be of some general interest. I think this one does about as good a job as you can do given the subject matter. The whispering commentary is annoying though

I personally thought this was one of the worst documentaries I've ever seen.  I was excited to see it as I am a computer scientist as well as a chess player, but it was terrible.  They played up the conspiracy theory so much that it seemed ridiculous by the end of it.  It was very light on details, and heavy on 'scary music'.  Argh.

I really enjoyed this film, even if Kasparov's accusations have largely been proved to be without substance.  The psychological pressure that Kasparov was under during the match was intense and this film captures the mood perfectly.

Highly recommended!

SPOILERS AHEAD....

...

Gotta remember: this is a documentary. I thought it was great. The creepy music was cool. It gave a whole different spin to the subject. It really added to the "conspiracy" tone of the film. I like Kasparov, and I happen to believe that he was cheated. I think there *were* some guys selecting a few important moves before the computer result was revealed. IBM was just too secretive about its logs and data and the room, etc. Too many things were weird. Any way...it's just a game right? Right? ... right? NO!  It is CHESS!

It was an all right movie. I think they tried to make it seem scary.
