Smart Sections
(Flexibility = A Better Chess Experience)
Our goal is to give you great pairings with a generous prize fund. To accomplish this, we need to
maintain a degree of flexibility. Here’s how our pairings will work:
<16 players = 1 section with prizes determined by # of entrants. Class prizes possible depending on
# of entrants (12 or more).
16-19 players = 2 sections of 8+ (no class prizes). Championship (Open) Section (1600 up), Candidates
Section (1599 down). TD reserves the right to adjust section cutoffs by +/- 200 rating points.
20-29 players = 2 sections of 10+. Class prizes possible depending on # of entrants (23 or more). Championship (Open) Section (1600 up), Candidates Section (1599 down). We expect this number
or more to attend. TD reserves the right to adjust section cutoffs by +/- 200 rating points.
30+ players = 3 sections of 10+. Class prizes possible depending on # of entrants (33 or more). Championship (Open) Section (1700 up), Candidates Section (1699-1400), Club Section (1399-below). TD reserves the right to adjust section cutoffs by +/- 200 rating points. The Tournament Director reserves the right move a player up one section to make another section playable. This will only be done if necessary (a section must have at least 4 players). For example, if there are only three players in the championship section, the fourth highest rated player must play up (if no one else wants to). Sections will be strictly limited to no more than 14 players maximum. When there are 3 Sections, the top section, known as the Championship (Open) Section, shall become "Semi Open." To enter this section, one must either qualify by rating, or be granted an exception by the TD. Exceptions will be granted to players in order of rating, from highest to lowest, and based upon the most current rating available (not published). Example: We have declared the top section to be 1800-up in a tournament with three sections. Eleven players qualify. The next highest rated player will be offered entry into the top section. If they decline, then the next highest to even out the section.
Our Commitment To North Carolina Chess:
1. Convenient location: located in the center of the state.
2. Premium facilities: with a separate skittles room! View Tournament Room PHOTO
3. Generous prize fund: 80% payout based on 30 or more entries; 75% payout based on 20 or more entries; 70% payout based on 16 or more entries. Less than 16 entries = TD's discretion (we must cover our out of pocket) but expect fairness always. We often pay out more than advertised.
4. Extras: You deserve on-time rounds, computerized pairings, and quickly rated tournaments. We are committed to providing you this and more.
Prize Structure Example
(10-man sections with 30 total entries)
This is not a projection of expected entrants, but an example of how prizes will work. No prizes guaranteed. Tournament Director may and often does pay out MORE THAN advertised. Check our stats for more information. Thanks for your support!
Championship (Open Section) = 1700-up (+/- 200 points)
1st Prize = $125 62.5%
2nd Prize = 50 25.0%
Class Prize = 25 12.5% Bottom Half Eligible
Candidates = 1699-1400 (+/- 200 points)
1st Prize = $125 62.5%
2nd Prize = 50 25.0%
Class Prize = 25 12.5% Bottom Half Eligible
Club Section = <1400 & Unrated (+/- 200 points)
1st Prize = $125 62.5%
2nd Prize = 50 25.0%
Class Prize = 25 12.5% Bottom Half Eligible
Our policy regarding Unrated players: Unrated players may play in the Championship Section for 1st or 2nd Prize, or in the Club Section (at the Tournament Director's discretion) for 1st or 2nd prize. If the Tournament Director has any indication that a player is significantly stronger than 1450, he may require that player to play in the Championship (Open) Section. Unrated players may not play in the Candidate's section unless there are only two sections, and are not eligible for class prizes (See Rule 28D, USCF Official Rules of Chess, 5th Edition). Championship Section is Open, but players under 1500 will be allowed only at the Tournament Director's discretion When there are three sections or more, the Championship Section will be "Semi-Open" as described above.
Based on 10-man sections with 30 total entries. For every two extra entrants, prizes will increase (For numbers of entrants not divisible by two, the odd entry fee will benefit the organizers). Additional entrants @ 80% payout will be split 1st prizes: 45%; 2nd prizes: 35%; Class prizes: 20% equally among all three sections. For example, 4 more entrants @ 80% payout = $80.00 more prize fund divided 36-28-16 split between the three sections (with numbers not divisible by three, odd dollars benefit the organizers). This would be work out to 12-9-5 making the prizes 137-59-30. Two more entries @ 80% payout = $40.00 more prize fund divided 18-14-8. Section prizes will be equaled out regardless of actual entries in each section. For example: Three Sections @ 8 players, 12 players, 12 players will pay the same as three 10-man sections with the two extra players increasing the total prize fund available.
