A woman claiming to have been Bobby Fischer's lover hopes to turn a stalemate into a checkmate.
Officials have exhumed the body of the late chess great – who died two years ago – in order to obtain DNA to determine if he is the father of a young girl in the Philippines.
The body was removed from its burial spot near the town of Selfoss, in Iceland, about 40 miles east of Reykjavik, police said.
A doctor, priest and other officials were present, according to officials, and the exhumation "was done in a professional and dignified way and according to law. The privacy of the deceased was protected at all times."
DNA samples were taken, and then the body was reburied.
Iceland's Supreme Court ruled last month that Fischer should be exhumed to determine whether he was the father of 9-year-old Jinky Young, whose mother, Marilyn, claims to have had a relationship with the famed chess champion.
There have been several legal battles over Fischer's estate in the years since his death at the age of 64. He left no will.
Fischer rose to fame in the early 1970s as one of the greatest chess players in the world, but later dropped out of competition. He became a recluse, and faced charges by the United States for breaking international sanctions against Yugoslavia when he played a match there in 1992.
The Chicago-born Fischer later renounced his U.S. citizenship and moved to Iceland, where he died in 2008.
