Here is a feature story about the 'Chess Killer' in Russia and his sentence:

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/10/29/russian.killer/

Alexander Pichushkin, the 'Chess Killer' got this name from his plan to kill one person for every square on the chess board. He claims to have killed 63 people but evidence shows that the number was 48. After trial he was sentenced to life in prison and must undergo mandatory psychiatric therapy.

He claims to have killed more people than he really did? Weird.

Or Chinese Checkers.  In fact, how do we know he wasn't trying to a person for every checkerboard square instead of a chessboard.  Wait, in Russia, it is draughts and it is played on a 10 by 10 board.  He wasn't even half way before he got caught "crowning" his victims.

That is quite common among serial/mass murderers who attain some notoriety, e.g. Albert "the Grey Man" Fish (IMO, the personification of pure evil.)  He was more unconscionably evil than the demon in my avatar.

He wasn't very imaginative as arch-fiends go. He should have engaged in a correspondence game with the lead investigator and submitted his moves on tiny pieces of paper inserted under the fingernails of his victims.

I agree with hooperxxx; fairly unimaginative serial killer.

Or perhaps, do a few menials (pawns), a couple of Knights, a few Bishops, a Queen and finally a King, perhaps destroy a Castle along the way too. This along with bizarre correspondence to the police, etc...

Not that I'm promoting this sort of thing and perhaps I've seen too many movies about serial killers.
