Erik Allebest is still much much more trustworthy than Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
I am going to boycott FIDE and cancel my membership there - I have already asked our chess club treasurer not to pay FIDE fees for me. I remain club member, but I don't need FIDE.
The webpage does say 'FIDE online rating'. I take this to mean that FIDE now has an online rating system, as well as OTB, correspondence, etc. The fact that FIDE is the governing body gives it greater status than other online chess sites, but it will only work if they do it well, the site is well designed, and properly policed. It will be interesting to see how well the Aceguard anti cheating system works.
The fact that FIDE is the governing body
I don't recognize FIDE as governing body, sorry. Every wise and responsible chess player should behave the same way. Kirsan is villain and crank elected via corruption and his deeds in chess world should be boycotted and ignored.
I was one of the first to open an account there. I paid the one-year-membership (the only way to get the "official" ELO) to have my games controlled by the ACE Guard System (anti-cheating system that guarantees "official" ELOs).
Then I found out that your "official" ELO changes also when you play against players that DON'T have an "official" ELO, in games that AREN'T guarded by the anti-chating system...
Isn't it sad?
How did you get a membership? The admin told me that the membership is available only during and after October 2013.
Hey onesown. There has to be some kind of misunderstanding there otherwise the rating system does not make sense neither the ACE. Cheers.
Does that mean people will earn official FIDE ratings and not separate online ratings? I have my doubts about how fool proof AceGuard will be.
Online ratings will be different from OTB ones.
I can't download the app!!!
It keeps saying download will start automatically and it doesn't happen.
I want to check it out.
All this downloadin, whats up with that?and i hope as free members you will still b ranked and properly recognised
Is this the beginning of the end for Chess.com?
erik: "There's nothing in our power to stop it."
Stay tuned ...
What does it matter?
Only theives worry about getting stolen from!
Only cheats worry about being out cheated!
Even Grand Masters use computers to annalze and find faster better ways to win it is accepted. Only they say you can not use computers online.
If you study books on chess that use computer annalazes how will they know?
They will not they can not they just want you to think they can.
Why? I am not a real FIDE member. I don't know them very well, why you have doubts?
Where to even start? The President of FIDE (who also claims to author the article in the op) claims he was captured by aliens and taken to another star. There he had a chat with the aliens.
Seriously how anyone can believe anything this person says without independant verification is beyond me.
What verification do we have of this "safeguard"? What do you know about it that makes you think this will be some sort of game changer? Are the "panel of experts" going to know the names of the players or are they going to make their rulings blind?
Really anyone that thinks, can see its impossible to completely eliminate cheating from online chess. ICC Chess.com Chessbase have all experimented with different anti-cheating measures. None claim they can completely eliminate cheating. There are tons of engines and lots of different lines each engine might suggest. Even if one were to use the engine as a blundercheck against his own moves it would still be cheating.
Is kirsan employing the aliens to look in the windows of everyone who plays in the fide arena to make sure they do not have a cell phone with a gm on the other end or a tablet in their hand?
The fact that the ratings are "official" doesn't mean that they are equivalent to the normal OTB FIDE ratings. In fact it's just a cheap marketing trick as far as I can tell. It's a bit like saying that chess.com ratings are "official" since they are official on chess.com. These ratings will be official for the fide webside, i.e they will not count for anything anywhere else, including fide rated otb tournaments. It's just another chess site.
However, the interface is nice, i really like the board.
Your OTB rating is only "official" for OTB. My English Chess Federation rating is only "official" in England. FIDE ratings are only "official" in FIDE events.......The fact is that FIDE is the governing body of world chess.... similar to the FIA in motorsport, UEFA for European football, etc. If FIDE want to offer officially sanctioned online events they can do. Why is it "official"? Because FIDE said so. Chess.com, ICC and everyone else doesn't have that luxury. Yes, I suspect they are doing it because they want to make money, but also surely you like the idea of being able to take part in properly organised leagues and tournaments under the FIDE banner? The leagues/clubs/ratings aspect of chess.com and every other server has been shockingly poor and meaningless since forever which is bizarre because chess is absolutely perfectly suited to online play in a way that governing bodies of other sports could only dream of. It's crazy that it's taken so long for FIDE to take notice but now they have I hope they do it really well. If, for example, they require fully paid up membership, use of real names and addresses, indentity verification and membership of a national chess federation to be allowed to play..... then absolutely the online game could be as "official" as the OTB games we play in weekend tournaments and in our local leagues.I've already signed up for the beta version. Like I said, I really hope it works well when they launch it properly in October.
No just about every online chess site has explored different ways to catch cheaters. But it doesn't come even remotely close to the protections you have in over the board play. Yet even there we often see people getting caught cheating. How much more will we see it when players are in there own homes with who knows who else and what else.
Computers make it really impossible, but even without computers simply using phones or having a strong chess playing friend present and helping you, is cheating.
This is why online tournaments have always suffered. It's not that the numberous chess websites are doing something wrong.
Online chess as a whole, including online ratings, are great. But you just can't take it seriously enough to get to the next level. Big prizes for tournaments will just lead to cheating.
Online ratings are good and they provide an incentive to try to win every game. But taking any online rating so seriously where you really care whether its icc, playchess, fics, chess.com or fide "official" is not for the intelligent.
And sorry to say Polar Bear is right. FIDE, especially with Kirsan, has done allot to really hurt chess over the years. The last thing we need, is to give them even more influence in the chess world.
Does the Fide online arena will be browser based like chess.com or will it required a dowloand and installation like ICC?
I hope it's browser, so that I'll be able to play at work when I have time. I can't download anything though, and if that is the way it's gonna be, I'll stick with chess.com..
Let's make it happen!
I tried downloading the FIDE application. I cannot even get it to install (Yes Java is installed)...
Not a good start...
aceguard is ridiculous theres no foolproof way to stop someone from cheating, and of course people will cheat to get official fide ratings and titles, this illyumivich guy is a hallucigenic fellow
I had the same problem. But then again, I was very drunk when I tried to set it up (I gave up eventually... looks like they don't need me there)
Will FIDE online arena be like chess.com with chess played on a website?
I know that the ''beta'' version is a software for dowload but what about the ''official'' due to release in October?
I think it will be a diferent rating. Like, "Standrat", "Blitz", "Online". But all are going to be back up by FIDE. So we can earn titles and everything. I THINK!!!
This is really pure speculation on your part. Perhaps initially they may count solely for online play, but I could see the system rapidly evolving. If Aceguard keeps the cheaters away, we might see online tournaments for cash money.
Lets face it, the future for chess is online. I participated in a weekend OTB the past weekend in a major city we had all of 20 people show up !
This is a really smart move by FIDE and long overdue. Years overdue in fact. Now, they should work on consolidating ratings. Give people one FIDE Rating, and get rid of local national ratings.
For some reason I can not download FIDE online arena. How do you even open JNLP files with Java?
When should one start concerning himself with the openings?
