Time Handicap Tournament!

Dear Local Chess Player,

Please note that Hastings & St. Leonards Chess club presents a day of competitive (but ungraded) chess for only £4!

Details:

  • Sunday 29th of March 2015.
  • Starts 10.30 am, latest finish 6pm.
  • To be held at Hastings Chess Club
  • Swiss System, six rounds of sixty minutes (total of both clocks).
  • Time handicaps to level the playing field.
  • Cash prizes!

I've arranged with the club Chairman, Mr. Marc Bryant, for non-club members to be admitted for the same price as club members i.e. £4 for the day, refreshments included. Non-members may avail themselves of this offer only once, after which the cost reverts to the normal non-member price of £6.

I went to the last one, and a great day was had by all. It's a lot of fun to play competitive chess without grading considerations, against players of all strengths.

Come and meet us and visit our historic club premises, a true Mecca of British chess. You'll find no snobbery amongst us, only friendship, a chat, a laugh, and a game of chess! No player too weak or too strong.

Those wishing to attend should email Marc on: bryant8830@yahoo.co.uk

Or, failing that, leave a note here, and I will ensure that he receives your intention.

Just to say once more, a well organised fun day out, amongst friends for only £4! (I personally stand by every word of that description.)

Yours sincerely

Doggy.

Sounds like a cool "tournament" to play in, but it's a long swim from Fiji.

I won the tournament with 5/6 (four wins, two draws). Along the way I beat a 2080 and drew with a 2094.

Here's the pick of my games, and one with which I am quite happy.

Thirty minutes each, no increment.

Nice game, m8. You went str8 for the kill m8. That's chess f8 m8 - once you get m8ed, other time your m8.

well done!

You are so right.

I've played the same opponent three times in the last five weeks. The first time I lost after spurning a draw. The second time I managed to draw a won game. This time I was out for blood.

Also I've had White in every game (all different competitions), and he played the same way each time, so I've been improving my opening play against his pet line. Finally paid off.

Cheers Rich, been a few years since I won a tournament. You start to wonder after a while: "Am I just a dirty choker?" Laughing

Nope. The old master is now over eighty, and whilst still around 2200, would have been horrified to play some games 3 minutes versus fifty-seven minutes, and the like. I had to play one, three versus fifty-seven, and believe me, there's no time for procrastination.

wow! quite a handicap.
