What's the earliest Magnus can get into the FIDE cycle to be a challenger? I think he opted out of the recent invites for the world cup.

I think it's still possible for him to play for the title in 2011.

He will probably be high enough rated to participate in the Candidates Tournament, and thus have a chance to meet the champion.

     Thanks for the information.

I hope he gets his place in the Candidates. All he needs is some time and hot experience. The WC title seems like his destiny.

The spots for the highest-rated who don't otherwise qualify pretty much guarantee Carlsen will be in.  He withdrew from the Grand Prix series because FIDE introduced an extra step in qualification after the series had begun.  These events paid much less than normal top tournaments, which players accepted since they were WC qualifiers.  When FIDE changed the rules in the middle of the cycle to diminish the value of Grand Prix qualifying, Carlsen and Michael Adams withdrew from the events.

We are blessed right now with many players who could contend for the title.  While the top five have remained relatively undisturbed over the last year or so, the second five and second ten have seen upheaval.

Carlsen and Kramnik have already guaranteed their places in the candidates tournament, together with Gelfand, Kamsky, loser of the current WC match, and if I'm correct, Aronian by the grand prix.
