This is just an idea of mine, no laughing. Maybe to avoid cheating chess websites should require players to use a webcam if playing online, to make sure they don't cheat while they're playing? What do you think?

If webcams are allowed, how can I, a chess calculating machine, continue to masquerade as a chess playing human ?

Yes indeed, no longer would the beautiful chess players of the world be able to hide behind monitors.

This could potentially pose a distraction for me though...

You really have to stop hounding me with your constant requests for more pictures, Czar. No means NO.

    You invest in web cams.

I'll invest in human-like automatons, ala The Turk.  The advert will read, "Comes in Barbie and Ken varieties.  You can cheat at web cam chess and look good doing it!"

No way! Then everyone would be able to tell when I blundered! I have too many expressions when I play, mostly faces like this:

The web cam alone will not stop cheating as you can only see the players face not the computer they are using. This means a chess program could be active and you wouldn't know it.

However, using web cams would personalize the game more so then now by allowing people to see and speak to each other as though they were in the same room. I believe another chess server all ready does this with their software program. How popular it is I do not know, but many people still enjoy their anonymity.

Ya, Creg sorta summed it up. I think it would be kool if this website had this feature, but i sometimes hop on when im eating (hate ppl watching me eat when their not! lol) or when i just got out of the shower with my hair going in all directions, so i wouldn't want to be required.

I believe that organizers of the internet Dos Hermanas Blitz event have hinted at the possibility of webcams so not such a crazy idea. Although for Chess.com this would not be logistically possible.

I think it would be cool just to have the option of playing a game where you can see your opponent. maybe have a room in the new live chess that allows you to do so? and set a limit on the number of players that can be in it to keep it from lagging like crazy. but idk might not be possible
