What's up with FIDE's "zero tolerance" for not being seated?

There is a new official FIDE rule if your opponent is not seated before the start of the game you win on forfeit. This ruling greatly influence the recent Chinese championship with the youngest non-title player to take the event.  Plus, this ruling is weighted as a zero tolerance policy, how stupid: Taking to much time filling a score sheet in the lobby, getting a glass of water, or using the restroom could cost you your game sounds silly.  I know being late may have psycological impact on an oppenent but for fairness the old ruling for late arrival should be in affect.

What's wrong with simply starting your clock?

    Great plan.

Should be implemented in all tournaments just like in any real sporting event.  It's about time chess players become a bit more responsible with their time when it comes to showing up for tournaments.

Is that what they do in Canada for hockey games?

No, the other team gets to drink your beer while they wait.

Hehe.  Not in professional leagues, and certainly not in the NHL. If your team is not ready to play at the designated time it is forfeit.

All professional competitions honor this and it is about time Chess grew up, too.

I don't agree 100%. This will weed out those that wait until the last minute to show up and waste time, but what about traveling conditions? Sometimes the shuttle from the hotel would be stuck in traffic and I don't think the players should be blamed for that.

    Yes they should.

Leave earlier and add in time for mishaps, just like people need to do in real world.

Should they not start the movie until everyone arrives?  How about we keep those trains idling in the station just in case someone was too long in the shower or forgot to set their alarm.

It's a game.  If you show up late you lose.  Acting as if losing a game by forfeit is some enduring hardship is just bollocks.

I think the FIDE new rule is stupid.  It's the player's time so what if there a few minutes late, they are not hurting anyone but themselves.

I don't know. Those shuttles usually depart every hour at certain hotels and leaving two hours early seems like a pain. Still I prefer this to letting people show an hour late - one of the reasons chess as a sport is seen as a joke.

In the Chinese championship, Hou Yifan arrived, sat down, filled in her score sheet, put down her drink, then stood up to have a little walk around the playing room, all easily in time for the round.

Then the round started, and she wasn't at her board, but she was in the same room. Five seconds later she was behind the board, but then she had already lost her game.

These rules were first in force for the Olympiad. Two thousand players in one hall. If you weren't exactly on time and behind your board at the exact moment, default. Many players were in hotels quite far away, and the traffic can be very bad, so to be sure they were on time, they had to plan to be there over an hour in advance, just in case. Of course most arrived much too early.

But in other sports, players have dressing rooms, places where they can concentrate and relax before the game. At the Olympiad, all two thousand had just the playing hall to stay in, stand in line for toilets and drinks, et cetera. And be at the board at the right second. Great preparation for a professional game, not.

When the opposing team is present hours in advance, do they make them wait on the ice until the game starts?

Actually it's insulting to the opponent. How would you feel if your opponent showed only to beat you with 5mins. on the clock? It's just showing off and unprofessional. No real sport would tolerate lateness...

Yes, as this was the issue, that some players would use this hour as part of their "strategery."

It is wrong making a person sit and wait and then at minute 59 just when they think they will get forfeit and all their energy fields have shifted, their opponent shows up full of energy knowing he his gaining psychologic advantage for the time consumed.

It is about time the fixed this and brought it into modern competitive praxis.

Standardization in this area is not so bad, really, and was a long time (forgive the pun) coming.

I believe your qouting the time Fischer did that to Reshevsky.  Honstely I wouldn't personally be unsetteled, I'd hunker down for a tough fight.  Lasker said Chess is above all else a fight.

What type of non-sequitar is this and what are you hoping to make point about with it?

Your posts are usually well thought out and mostly correct! but you lost me on that one, and I am one for zany metaphors and analogies.  Laughing

There is no rule that starts the game if a players shows up early nor is anyone lobby for it!

Only a person that does not see the real problem the rule is addressing would think starting the clocks solves something.

It is ok.  It is a nuanced issue and not an issue everyone is capable or willing of wrapping their brains around.  It involves $$$ and sponsors as well as simply the players.
