28 coolest chess sets ever

They put the wrong crowns on the king & queen of that most expensive chess set.  And I was thinking the same thing re: unicorns.  I'd rather see a horse's head on the same twisted design as the rest of it.

And is that set for real?  Those pics looked like cartoon drawings.  I'd love to see pics of the real set.

Lord of the Rings sets are a dime a dozen. Okay probably a bit more expensive than that. Perhaps US$1200.00.

Now you can combine not playing chess with this set and not drinking as well, at least not from with the ones with glass.

The King is bigger, they just made it look a little like a queen.  But I have to agree with you on the unicorns.  The rest of the set is this cool twisted design, and the unicorns look completely out of place.

It seems like it was created by people that don't know chess very well. It looks like they just put the wrong crowns on the king and queen. As for the unicorns; they probably thought that if horses are good then unicorns are better. They look completely wromg IMHO.

Hi folks, while we're on the subject, I was wondering if anyone could help me find a particular chess set, of the  type seen on the cover of "The Chess Players' Bible." Looks pre-Staunton, haven't been able to find one. Thanks.

The main difference seems to be in the pawns. The former set's ones being quite the little fatties.

Apart from that it looks like a variation on a theme and with persistent googling one may find a closer match if the one I linked to isn't close enough.

IMO, it's an attractive little decorative/practical hybrid set.

I'd keep Krush away from those kings.

This is the "Modern" chess set in Chessmaster 3000 and is also used in Chessmaster 11, though the bishops are different.

I went to Mexico on a cruise and got this cool chess set (in my picture) it's made of onix (white) and alabaster (black) I saw some awesome chess boards that we couldn't afford like a set with tall (I'm talking like a 1 1/4 feet tall for the king)mad of glass

The set in my avatar is one I picked up in Mexico (also on a cruise, port-of-call Progreso), made of marble & black onyx.  I've seen the ones like you got, but I preferred to get one with more-or-less Staunton pieces.  If we ever go back, I might get another set of a different type.

I'd like to see a larger picture of your set.  I can't hardly see anything in that tiny pic.

well all the listed sets are very cool indeed ... really love the sheep and dragons :)

but this set really floors me :)

hand-carved 40,000 year old Wooly Mammoth ivory set ... and frankly, i don't think the price is too bad considering :D

another favorite that was featured in Smithsonian Magazine some years ago was a Russian Reds v. Whites ... very nicely styled china

I'm with Prawn on this one.  That may be the most motley collection of awful sets ever assembled.

i don't trust people who use the word 'awesome'. It spells trouble.

Yeah, the only ones I really like are the LED chess sets, though being an electronics tinkerer I kind of like the motherboard set.  But it would be extremely hard to play chess with it.
