A Special Thanks to Alan Dewey for My Chess Set Restorations

Sort:

Alan Dewey has made many fine chess set repairs for me in the past and i'd like to thank him in this post.. I don't think Alan gets the recognition he deserves as the world's top restorer of antique chess sets and just wanted to make collectors aware of the service he provides. Below is a pic of some Russian Soviet pieces that Alan will be repairing.

I am sure Alan will do a great job on those pieces. It does look like a major project from looking at those pieces though. I can't wait to see pics of the restored pieces.!

KH, it all depends, but Alan has done some restoration work for me, and his rates are extremely reasonable. Alan is as knowledgeable as they come, especially on Jaques sets. If you check out his Chesspy web site, you'll find a lot of informative articles and videos he's posted there. Alan is first rate all the way and a complete gentleman as well.

KH, take some pictures of the pieces and damage you want repaired, and email them to him with a description of what you'd like done. He'll give you an estimate.

Update: Just got my repaired Soviet pieces back from Alan Dewey. As usual, Alan did a fantastic job. The black finish pieces show lots of wear and I'm debating if I should have Alan refinish them.

Very nice! Great work, Alan!

I recently saw a nice Soviet set being offered on etsy. The only thing was that each of the royals were missing their finials. I emailed Alan and asked for assistance. He was very encouraging so I bought the set. When it arrived I sent the royal pairs to Alan.

Since I had a clean slate (and am planning on keeping the set for my own use), I was free to choose the type of finials for the kings. I was leaning toward the spikes seen in the earlier sets not being that crazy about the "correct" ones we usually see. Alan offered flames. And I'm glad he did. I love it.

Thanks, goodknightmike!! And that replacement cross looks excellent. I've watched Alan's videos but seeing his completed work still makes me wonder how he does it.

Just got more repaired pieces back from Alan Dewey: king finials, collar chips , queen's crenellations and replacement pawns. Thanks  Alan  for the top notch repairs

Wow, those look great, goodnightmike. It must feel good to have them back and looking ready for a few more decades of action.
