Vinyl for tournament or portable style boards.  Perhaps wood or marble at home.  Check mine out at BoardsofChess.com

I guess, it would also depend on the type pf pieces that you have, or plan on buying.

I like a board where the pieces seem to float across the board, not one where they feel glued to a spot.

 In any case then buy felted, wood pieces. :)
