I am looking for some suggestions regarding purchasing a book on chess for my son for his upcoming birthday.
He will be 9 years old and I would say that he is an intermediate player for his age and loves the game. He knows how to defend scholars mate, is familair with simple openings like the Ruy Lopez, and has competed in several tournaments with his school's chess club. This proud Dad is excited to say that he finished in the top 60% at the recent state championships for his age division!
A trip to the local bookstore left me feeling a little overwhelmed. There is just so much out there.
So, anyone out there have any thoughts?
Thanks!

Yasser Seirawan wrote a "Winning Chess" series of very readable books which I think is suitable. "Play winning Chess" "Winning Chess Tactics" "Winning Chess Endings" "Winning Chess Brilliancies" "Winning Chess Openings" "Winning Chess Combinations" and "Winning Chess Strategies". Any of these or all of these would make a good choice, in my opinion.

pff don't have an idea what kind of books there are for kids. But I'm sure that one of the versions of chessmaster would be very usefull and fun! It has a very easy interface and it has teachings for all levels. It even has a fun section especially decide for kids where they learn all kinds of stuff, like thematic chess wich will teach them pawn structures and stuff. I recommend a version of chessmaster also for you, not because your bad, (I haven't even looked at your rating) but because there is very much to learn! I have it for a year now and I'm still doing exercises!
It's very child friendly, unlike fritz, where I still have a hard time. Also books are kind of boring for most kids>>

I love books Big Time but Chessmaster might be a solid alternative?
