If you can get Fink or Mac Ports running you could use Scid. I tried and failed on my ancient G4 contraption. Exachess is the other "proper" database option but you have to pay for that. Gambit is another Mac database but has less features for the money. Jose is another possibility although it is not really a finished product. I use Sigma as GUI for chess engines and database. Although it does not have the fancy features of a proper databse it has sufficient to serve my needs.

The alternative to the above mentioned Mac solutions would be running Windows on your Mac. Your Macbook will run Windows via Bootcamp (free from Apple I think) or via Parallels (not free). Running Windows would give you access to PC chess software such as Chessbase or Chess Assistant.

A database is just a posh filing system. At it's simplest it is just a way to keep your games and play through them. Databases can also often filter games by opening sequence, player names, Elo rating, event etc. Sigma's database functions are part of its collection functionality. Have a look at what you can do with collections and you will have a good idea about how databases can be useful.
