Hi, does any know a free chess program I can use. People always talk about running moves through their computers, where can I get the software to do this? Thanks

I believe it cost me $20 for my copy of Chessmaster from Ubisoft, it is very user friendly for beginners.  Fritz is what I would recommend for more intermediate players, I believe you can order it online from places like Wholesale Chess.

Do a search for Arena. That will give you a graphical interface for many chess engines. There are several engines available on the Arena site, some bundled with various versions of Arena. Good free engines are Crafty, Fruit (early versions are free), Gambit Fruit and Toga II. If you have a Mac Sigma Chess will do the same job as Arena and again Fruit, Gambit Fruit and Toga II are available.

Winboard is completely free and come with two variants of the GNU chess engine.  Winboard can also be configured to use different chess engines.

It's not the prettiest looking interface, but it is completely free.

I like Winboard a lot. I have configured 15-20 engines on there. When people say "run it through their computer" they usually use a very strong engine, they may not even use a graphical interface.
