I was wondering if anyone knows of an English translation of the German chess books series "Weltgeschichte des Schachs"? I came across a Lasker volume first and have discovered it is a series of books on the great players published in Germany as well as in German circa 1958 ... The thing that hooked me on this is that there is a board diagram of the game every five black moves so it would be great to carry along to study (I can usually go ten moves at the max in my mind without having to refer to a board or diagram) ...
Anyone know of one? Or perhaps I should learn the German translation of the chess notation symbols? lol :)
thanks for any help cormac
Given the days of digital technology and databases, I would be amazed if a publisher would chance publishing this series.
I agree you have found a great buy as a traveling book with those many diagrams.
Learning the notation in German is not too difficult:
L = bishop
S = knight
T = rook
D = queen
K = king
I have the books on Lasker, Capablanca, Keres, Petrosian, Anderssen 1 (I have never seen 2), and Petrosian. The books on Tal and Spassky seem to surface now and again, but the ones on Morphy, Paulson, Botvinnik, and Euwe appear less commonly.
thanks nimzo very helful ... i saw it on ebay and it ended up going for only $12 in the end (with the issued monograph as well) and wish i'd pulled the trigger on it ... there's a Tal and Petrosian up now but the lowest oen starts at $35 which is out of the range i like to stay in for my chess books :)
thanks again i'll keep your translation on hand for future reference :)
Keep your eyes open, and I sugegst pulling the trigger next time onw appears. $12 would have been a steal, and I am amazed at that low price. At one website, the Anderssen, Keres, and Botvinnik are selling for $75-80 each, and a Petrosian is selling for $35.00.
An another side, I just saw a translation for the Zurich 1953 Interzonal for sale. No, not the Bronstein version (which I think is an outstanding book in its own right), but one by Najdorf.
next on my to-buy list.
yes! i just saw that book on the zurich at new in chess when i was on there to get a subscription to the magazine ... i didn't know najdorf had written one to be honest ... only knew of the bronstein one and had been keeping an eye out on it on ebay for a low price and nice condition ... i'll have to add that to my wishlist no doubt
and yes i will definitely pull the trigger next time lol ... sorry i didn't but i really didn't realize i guess that the 'translation' of the games wouldn't be so daunting ... i have a fear of foreign languages and esp german from a traumatic experience in high school german class *shiver*
hey all ... re-upping this thread not that i have found an english translation but found a very nice ebay auction on a big chunk of this beautiful series'
the first nine volumes of the set and they look to be in pretty nice condition :)
Reasonably priced, IMHO.
Wish I had spare cash...
me too but after the holidays there's no spare cash around ... i think it's a good price for these too
