Fritz 11!!

Ya im thinking of buying Fritz 11 because of the infinite controls and game analysis options. :):):)
Wil_Bloodworth

I have been a software developer since the early 80s and I can honestly tell you that Fritz (and most chess software in general) is a huge piece of crap.  I bought Fritz 11 with Deep Rybka recently and it is one huge pile of garbage.  Germans are great at designing cars but they totally SUCK at software!  And they're even worse at writing help manuals.  The free software Arena has a much easier to use user interface.  Would someone with some time on their hands please write some decent chess software!!!

bondiggity

well you can insult the GUI's all you want, but when you start insulting the UCI chess engines that is when you crossed the line!!

I will second Wil_Bloodworth's sentiment regarding Fritz, et al. What you are paying for with Fritz + Chessbase is the assortment of games and the Fritz analysis and training videos. However, for the price you should be somewhat entitled to an intuitive interface and database integration. It is really, from a software perspective, garbage.

Hey people. I just installed fritz 11. I think there is something wrong with it. It's showing d4 as the best 1st move and Nc3!! as the second best first move at depth 17 and 18. Past that it gives the best first move as d4! What is wrong with it? I reinstalled a number of times and also reset to default settings a number of times. My machine is good and up to date. Any ideas or suggestions? This is in ifinite analysis.

Fritz 11 shows e4 seventy thousand d4 sixtysix thousand NF3 sixteen thousand. e4 d4 + and NC3=. Check your opening book thats on your hard drive.

Thanks for the input. I was curious about the differences.

If someone hasn't already said this, you can buy Rybka through ChessBase with the Fritz interface. That way you can have all the benefits of Rybka with a user interface that will be just like Fritz 11 should you get that later.

But I would definitely recommend Rybka as a must have starting point before getting other programs. There has never been a computer chess program so much more advanced and stronger that its competition than Rybka.

You're looking at the engine evaluation with several lines? If so, I don't think there is anything wrong with it. It will play the moves from its book until it runs out, but it is not uncommon for a computer to rank 1. Nc3 high up in its evaluation. The computer is looking at the start position as never having seen it before, so it is like a super-genius child but with no experience to tell it that 1. Nc3 is not optimal in the long run.

EDIT: Maybe I misunderstood. You mean it is giving the third, fourth, fifth etc. best first moves as 1.d4 also? Hmmm weird. I would look at the engine settings. Maybe it is being limited there somehow.

From what I read, the ELO is about 30 points higher. Fritz 10 came out when Chessmaster 10th edition came out - a couple years ago. I have Fritz9, but find Chessmaster much more user friendly.

Sorry for the proliferation of posts.

Let me make another suggestion. Since you already have Fritz 9, you can just buy the Rybka engine and install it under Fritz 9 as another engine. That would be cheaper.

I still use the free 5.32 version.  Does everything i need it to do.

I got the new version of Fritz (12) yesterday and have already got rid of all my old  ones. I have had all versions of Fritz since the floppy disc verion of Fritz 3 around 1995.The new version costs approximately half of what Fritz 3 cost and it is 1000 times better. The free Premium usage of playchess.com is worth the money by itself. There are so many ways links to look at free online lessons and simultaneous displays where you can play titled players.Chessbase has lots of it's own "room" you can enter for lessons and there is also radio chessbase. The features of the main proram ar enough to keep even the most serious player happy after the interface was completely re-written and some of the harder to find features are now easy to see.I would recommend it to anybody.

I have bought Fritz Grandmaster 11, but there seems to be no manual to explain how to use this software, and I am at a loss to figure it all out.  Is there any manual anywhere?
