Now I really love the that board, the peices too, but what I was wondering was how would they look together.

You can choose from:

Boxwood and Golden Rosewood

Ebonized Boxwood

Black and Natural Lacquered

Red and Natural Lacquered

Boxwood and Rosewood

 

On the site they it, when you go to choose what style you want it shows you a color sample, what do you think would look good with that board, I am thinking the golden rosewood seems how the dark squares on the board are not so dark. Do you think the normal rosewood would like nice? I hate buying things online. 

My personal opinion is that the Golden Rosewood does not offer enough contrast between the dark pieces and the dark squares. The piece would tend to become "visually lost" on the square (this is especially true with ebony pieces on ebony squares which is a no-no).

 

However, the Rosewood (non-Golden) offers a beautiful color that contrasts nicely against dark squares. Of course it's also $20 more.

 

I will say this: I own a HOS set (see my photo album) and the quality is extraordinary. Your money will be well-spent.

I'd go for the boxwood and ebonized combination. The contrast of the black pieces against the dark (but reddish-dark) squares is optimal, to my eyes.

Let me second the investment in House of Staunton pieces. They cost a little more, but you know you're getting your money's worth in quality. I splurged on a Collector Series with a 4" king in real ebony, and I couldn't be happier.  

These are physical instruments, and if you're serious about chess you'll be spending hundreds of hours with them, both in your hands and before your eyes. It's worth it to make that experience as physically and aesthetically rewarding as possible. What you're buying here could last you a lifetime (several lifetimes, since you can pass them on), and yet cost less than you could blow on a single weekend playing golf on a fancy course. It's worth it.

I own a House of Staunton set and I second that it's money well spent. Personally, I prefer the boxwood and ebonized boxwood, but buy what you like. :)

Jasn - That's exactly the set I bought. It's a beauty, isn't it? I'll have to include it in m will so the kids won't fight over it.

I'd love to own their mammoth tusk ivory/ebony set, but I spent less money on my truck.
